Exhaust noises

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me or tell me not to be a silly sausage.

I'm new to this Caterham owning lark, having picked up a 1.8k series supersport in December.

I went for a short blat between the showers this afternoon, and could hear a high pitched rasping sound coming from the exhaust

, I think. But it's only there at certain revs, around 2,000-2,500 and sounds like something resonating.

I've have a fiddle round the mountings and it all seems solid enough. So, do I have a trip to an exhaust specialist in my near future? Is there anything else I need to check?

Thanks in advance.

Fraser.

Check the big jubilee clips that hold the heat shield in place, often the culprit. Otherwise, what exhaust is it, single pipe outside the body or a 4 branch? Is it definitely the exhaust?

It could be the thermal wadding inside the exhaust has thinned out a bit and the central pipe within the exhaust is resononating/vibrating at those revs.

Check the manifold nuts on the exhaust. Check the three bolts that hold the cam cover on top of the engine. It may be the baffles or perforated pipe coming loose.

Is it a welded end on the silencer or bolt-on ?

If welded, you will need someone to cut the end off and reweld it. Not your average exhaust centre.

Try thumping it with your fist when cold .... can you make it rattle ?

The nuts and clips are all nice and tight. There is a metallic sounding rattle when I give the silencer a slap.

However, I found a dozen or so bits of gravel trapped between the heat shield and the silencer.

I'll take it out for a test in an hour or so and report back.

Thanks for your kind advice.

Fraser.
