Graham King
Hi folks, I have a slight oil leak from my sump, I need to drop the sump anyway so will look at it then, but when refitting the sump should I use any sealant? If so what type and where? Both sides of the gasket or just the underside or topside? Thanks for any advice. Graham.
eagle
You'd be better off with info/advice from someone more experienced than me, but I'd advise you to use an anaerobic sealant and you may as well apply it to both sides of the gasket. That way, there's more likelihood that the engine will just flush it out, avoiding any clumps forming internally. See what the experts say as well, but that's what I did for mine after going through the BC searches for about 5million hours...!!!
Steve T
Loctite 574 applied to one surface only in a continuous bead is what you want, assuming you are not using a sump gasket as per a wet sump.
Graham King
Thanks folks, should have said that it is a wet sump k-series. What exactly is an anaerobic sealant? I really need to find some tomorrow, so will try Halfords. Graham.
Roadsport06
You shouldn't need any as your wet sump on a k-series has a gasket and so shouldn't leak. I'd just take off the sump, remove the foam if it is in there, modify the sump gasket with two holes drilled, clean the edges and refit. The gasket should last several times of refitting. Roadsport06
Ps that's what I'd do to our F1 cars if we had a wet sump. Edited by - Ferno on 24 Apr 2011 12:15:

Stationary M25 Traveller
No sealant .... just the gasket. Make sure no dirt on surfaces. Dress any scratches on metal parts.
Graham King
Thanks folks. I have no foam and have the gasket mod already, will just drop it and make sure all is clean then. My problem sounds remarkably like Jetto's in the other sump thread, oil coming from back right hand corner of sump. Graham.
