Miltec
Not actually for sale yet, still not pulled the trigger on the new engine. Does anyone know how much this would be worth, with twin 40's ECU etc. Was rolling roaded in 2009 at 115.5 Bhp & 119.5 lb ft, very smooth power curves. Archie Procter
That sounds a lot of power for an 8v Vauxhall, unless it has been tweaked? Standard ones claim to be around 100bhp. Reason I ask is that Classic Grads still race 8v VX's, so you may well get a buyer in the racing community if it's a standard out of the box engine. Miltec
I've never had anything done other than the Carbs sorted by a Weber guy, still got the engine seals on it from when it was a Scholarship car. May be down to the carbs being rejetted etc properly? got all of the plots if anyone wants a look 😬 http://racing.miltec.biz/images/dyno.jpg http://racing.miltec.biz/images/dyno_BHP.jpg http://racing.miltec.biz/images/dyno_lbft.jpg Edited by - Miltec on 9 Feb 2011 12:50:
James_Russell
😳 I've never seen a standard 1600vx put out more than about 101bhp... and re-jetting wouldn't make a 15bhp gain (the standard jets certainly don't restrict fuelling). Is it possible that a previous owner had some head work or a cam replacement done buy caterham, who replaced the seals afterwards? Thinking about it, I've heard it is possible to change the cam without removing the head on these engines- is there a seal on the cam cover? Miltec
Nothing in any of the paper work I have suggests it's had anything done? http://racing.miltec.biz/images/pict1036.jpg http://racing.miltec.biz/images/pict1038.jpg http://racing.miltec.biz/images/pict1039.jpg Previous owner had neglected it a bit, not in god shape when I got it. andy_h
I use to have an ex Academy car with this type of engine my seals were in tact (when I sold it) and were similar to your pics. I don't think you can change the cam as the front cover is also wire sealed. Nothing to stop seals being replaced thou 😳 Could be an over reading rolling road. When I bought my current car (2.0VX) it came with a dyno plot of 250BHP but was told when I got it tested/carbs re-set up that my engine could never make that figure, 210 to 220BHP maybe, but not 250BHP
Tim Sture
I had several conversations with Derek of Classic Carriage fame in 2000-2001 (I did Academy in 2000) regarding the Vx engine and his view (having tried several things for a customer) was that it was not possible to do anything with this engine - although that was subsequently disproved by Blydenstein (conversion no longer available). So it appears unlikely that your engine has an extra magic 15bhp! Apologies if this constitutes interfering with your advert
andy_h
in fact my old Academy car WAS Tim's car first 😬
Miltec
Any way the question still stands, how much is it worth?
Matthew Willoughby
Maybe McMillan Motorsport would have an idea as they look after many Grads cars.
Archie Procter
I've seen them go for anything between £250 and about £400. Pretty much the only people interested in these now are Classic Grads drivers. Suggest an ad on the Grads site? Agree about the over-reading RR btw if nothing has been done and it's still sealed. You can change the jets and set the carbs up right but it's unlikely to gain any more than a few hp.
