Stef
Whats the pipe the sticks pokes out around the gearbox area underneath my 1700 crossflow, and does it matter if a tiny drop of oil (literally a drop) is coming out of it after a 40mile drive? It appears to come from the rear right hand side of the engine block. Thanks
jonboylaw
Engine breather pipe probably. Should really have a catch tank. Jonathan My Flickr ----------------------------------- 95% there :) 92 Supersprint, Ford LSD LA, RK AX Crossflow.
Pezky
Probably the engine breather pipe, trace it back to see where it comes from. If it is, it will come out of the rear of the engine block, below the carbs. A good idea to put catch tank on it. CaterBram
Or it could be the vent pipe from the catch tank if one is already fitted, Q469 WET, 1990 1690 Xflow Long Cockpit in Ali except for the red bits. .CaterBram on Facebook
RobW
Make sure the catch tank is vented, or you'll have a nice oily engine !!
hendrixswhitestrat
Yep breather pipe.....tiny drop nothing to worry about, lots = blowby/worn pistons or rings
dalongbloke
Stef... if it is the breather (sounds like it), a catch tank is a good idea as oil will exit the pipe (it's what its designed to do), flow underneath the floor, and gradually coat your rear axle and A frame. And it will smell! Great for anti rust, but BAD for bushes which will fail much quicker. McBreadhead
I too have the black dangly thing and want to do track days now. Is the oil catch tank a must? If so what should I be doing about it? Homemade v purchased etc?
elie boone
Is an oil catch tank a must ? how would u feel if you skid into the barrier on someone elses oil ? In theorie it needs to hold as much as the engine holds but 1ltr is a minimun, i always try to use a 2.5ltr catch tank
Drumster
Even with my x/flow I always managed to exist on a 0.6l catch tank and in all the trackdays and sprints I only ever managed to get a few drips into the tank no matter how hard I tried
elie boone
The catch tank is there in case of an engine failure, once i helped cleaning 1/4 track at Croix and only a few hours later to clean more than 1/2 track, no one was amused by this ! bstark
On a typical track day my xflow catch tank is half full after each session and ends up getting poured back in the top before going out again. They do breath heavily at high revs and high cornering forces.
michaeljclark
OK, numpty question time - why does a 7 have a Catch Tank - where does it all go with your average tin top?
CageyH
Straight back into the inlet manifold, to get burnt off.
McBreadhead
Thanks all, so is there a wee kit to buy? And does the height of the catch tank matter particularly? I am guessing whatever fixing is used it needs to allow the bottle to detach so contents can be poured back
