  1. Tom - hope all's well with the car after that wonderful day at Snetterton last week??

    14 inch tyres

I agree with Nick (as someone famously said..) Toyo R888Rs are superbly grippy as in the dry and fine in all but extreme wet conditions. I did an all-day wet trackday at Spa a few years ago with 888s and they were surprisingly good.

    Slick tyre sizing

Hi Whatsup - Can you re-confirm the sizing of the rear slicks, please? 13/57-13 can't be right? Thanks
  4. ...at 2.15pm on the A20 near Ashford, being driven by a suspicious-looking man in a woolly hat. A great day for a blat..
  5. You won't experience much difference between 13 and 14" - the main factor to think about is what kind of tyres you want (sticky like ZZRs or R888s, or harder road tyres like Toyo T1R) which can give huge variations in ride as well as handling. Generally I think Caterhams are at their best on 13" wheels - light and nimble handling, and the tall profile of eg R888s makes them very comfortable for touring too.. Some people fit 15 or even 16" wheels with uncomfortable low profile tyres because they fill the wheel arches and look good but the ride is usually terrible. I agree about sticking with 6" wide rears if you have around 140hp.
  6. I have a 260hp Duratec, which uses very little oil in road use but quite a lot when on track. One or two litres during an open pit lane day with lots of track time would be quite normal...
  7. Hello Solstice! Another private message sent......
  8. Piers I really do feel for you... Big disappointment after so much effort and input. Don't let Chapman Cars off the hook... If you finally find a fix, and the weather improves, a Kent Sunday blat (this weekend?) is long overdue! Watch this space. Stephen
  9. If you do 10 track days a year you should definitely go for ZZRs. They are excellent in the dry and fine in the wet once warm. Toyo R888s are almost as good, but not quite. R888Rs are OK-ish in the dry on track, IMO, and very good in the wet. I haven't tried the ZZS but I have always found CR500s poor by comparison with ZZR and 888 on track..
  10. I am on Anglesey now - a beautiful warm and sunny evening with (incredibly!) a good forecast for tomorrow's track day too (with Lotus-on-Track). Ten Caterhams are booked in so the various Lotuses will be in good company... The only downside so far was the NINE hour journey here from Kent - nightmare Friday traffic
  11. As I sit at the Admiiral Rodney in Horncastle with a pint of beer, after a fantastic day at Cadwell, may I be the first to thank all involved for making this a really classic Club track day.... And good news (for many) that the mandatory FIA bar rule has been relaxed by the Club at last! Stephen
  12. Thanks Nick - photos sent as requested
  13. Similar to: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/steering-wheels/sparco-270-steering-wheel ...but rather more worn! The suede is quite flat and it needs some TLC. Ready-drilled exactly as a MOMO. £50 plus postage
  14. BTTT - in the probably vain hope of finding something suitable before the schlep up to Cadwell next week....... Thanks
  15. My guess is that you stand a reasonable chance of being under 105db on a static test (eg most MSV circuits) but it would best to avoid tracks where they have particularly strict drive-by limits (eg Brands, Bedford, Donington, Goodwood). ISTR Cadwell doesn't routinely do drive-by testing, only static, so you might want to come up for the club trackday on 27 May?

  17. I always thought that "safety upgrades" were anything expensive of which one's nearest and dearest might not otherwise approve?
  18. Thanks John - that's very kind and nearly what I was after - but mine is 1.95 / 6' 5" wide
  19. Ah no the A max bed is 6ft 5".... thanks anyway.
  20. High level preferred, but low possible. Thanks
  21. I used to run a wet sump SLR with an Apollo. I found that when I removed the foam baffle (as everyone said I should) I got very noticeable and consistent surge on track on left hand corners. I then tried the DVA gasket mod, but that made no difference. Finally I put the baffle back in, and - lo - the surge disappeared and OP was rock steady again in all conditions. I conclude the baffle fulfils a real and important function. I then moved to a routine of replacing it every year, to minimise the risk of it breaking up. This worked for me.
  22. Ian - I think a new career beckons!
