Either method appears to be popular - so long as it's done right. Plenty of threads on here regarding removal of powder-coat from wing stays, using big-heads&cable ties, or wrapping Sikaflex around the stays.

Me - I've bolted them on, but wish I hadn't. Now have cracked wings around the bolt holes. ☹️

On the bright side - they'd have cracked anyway from stone chips

I seem to recall the honeycomb boot floor is partially cut away on the underside where it sits above the fuel pump. I'm not anywhere near it to check, though.

Must be a common problem - mine's done it once before as well. Sorted itself out after a short time. Just try not to use too much water!

Cheapest/easiest? Connect a small solar trickle charger to the battery - Maplin do a few different ones and they work in quite dull conditions too. here

Similar symptoms: I had to adjust the master cylinder push-rod length by approx 1mm on a new-build. An alternative if you don't wish to change the pedal stop.
