  1. thanks for the thoughts! I havent got the build manual (would love a copy if anyone has one spare!), it was factory built, i think as a Scholarship car, maybe this was added to give it a little more throttle as suggested. Anyone with a VX1600 out there who can tell me what it should be like? Any of the Classic Grads maybe? Cheers! Andy. 1999 VX1600 Classic - andysteele.net
  2. I`ve had a problem with the throttle for a few weeks now, been getting progressively worse. After an amount of driving, 15 mins or so (time is getting less and less) ,the revs dont drop easily. I thought it was a carb issue but realised i can counter act this by putting my foot under the throttle pedal and pulling it back up. I have checked the throttle return springs and these work fine when just pushing the throttles on the carbs. Today i took the pedal box cover off (for the first time)..... First thing i noticed is that once the cable comes into the pedal box it angles up about 20-30 deg. Where it attaches to the throttle pedal there is an ali extension piece, if this extension piece wasnt used the cable would be straight! It appears this angle force on the cable has caused the cable to wear down the cable outer casing end. I`m not sure if the sticking throttle is due to the cable catching against the casing end or the pedal itself not pivoting cleanly, either way think i need a new throttle cable! Is this the standard setup, looks like a new cable will suffer the same fate. pics: #1 - from windscreen looking at pedal box, see extension section - pic#1 #2 - from the near side looking across the engine, see angle of cable - pic#2 is this the correct setup for a VX1600 8v? Looks like i need a new cable, anything else? Cheers, Andy. Andy - andysteele.net - 1999 VX1600 Classic Edited by - andysteele on 8 Apr 2008 11:14:57
  3. thanks for the help brunel, very useful! looks like i can link the spare outlets then, has anyone done this with the 3 outlet submarine pipe, or should i swap to the single outlet submarine, which is shown in the diagrams from the Assembly Guide. 4. i`m thinking of removing the heater from my Scholarship spec 1600 VX Classic. It was retro fitting by Caterham Cars when the previous owner bought the car from them secondhand. I need to replace the radiator as its leaking, so thought i`d go for Silicone Hoses at the same time, and remove the heater, back to original spec. At the mo there is a hose from the submarine (3 outlet) to the heater and one from the water pump to the heater. The submarine also has one short pipe to the pump, the 3rd submarine pipe is from the header tank. So if i remove the heater i have a submarine outlet and outlet on the water pump, do i just connect these with a pipe? Or do i need to blank them off? anyone got an engine bay pic of a VX16000 with no heater to compare? Cheers, Andy. ------------------------ andysteele.net 1999 VX1600 Classic
  5. been out for a fairly long drive (by my standards so far atleast), over an hour of reasonably steady driving, villages, some country lanes not pushing too hard. Towards the end of the drive as i was approaching home i noticed the revs not dropping as fast as normal when i dipped the clutch for gear changes and stopping. e.g. stopped at traffic lights, off the throttle, revs at 2k rpm for 10s then dropped to less than 1k (normal tick over). At home i checked the throttle return springs and these appear to working fine, a blip on the throttle and they pull back straight away, but the revs dont drop as quickly. it doesnt appear to happen on shorter runs so suggests it something that happens once it has been hot for a while.... car is Vauxhall 1600 8v, standard twin webber's etc any ideas? ------------------------ andysteele.net 1999 VX1600 Classic
  6. I`m getting ready to do my first oil change on my Classic 1600 VX. CC have recommended GFE700 filter. I`m going to get the Comma Eurolite 10w40 from my local motor factors. How much should i expect it to take, 3.5-4ltr? What sump plug/washer do I need? want to replace both. Anything else I need, or anything to be aware of before i start? ------------------------ andysteele.net 1999 VX1600 Classic
  7. thanks for the responses, clears things up a bit, without any owners manual I`m just guess what the warning lights (and switches) are all for! oil level is fine checked that before the weekend, it was changed last march with the filter, its on my list of things to do before driving it hard. there is no "mayo" in the oil and doesnt appear to drop any or burn any. sounds like nothing to worry about anyway! as for the battery well, the car was hardly used for the last 4 years or so, i think about 500 miles since 2003! (only 4k in total) This is my major concern really so I`m going to be giving it a thorough check over now i have finished showing it off to the family! ------------------------ andysteele.net 1999 VX1600 Classic
  8. newbie question. 1600 8v VX classic. picked the car up last sunday and used it all day, oil pressure was fine between 2 and 4 most of the time. car has not been used since last sunday till today (1 week) stored in a garage. came to start today, standard procedure I have been told, 2 pumps on the throttle, then turn over and fire. It came to life fine, but the oil pressure stayed low, and the red light in the center of the dash (I assume oil pressure warning) was on. I let it tick over in the garage, with a little throttle to keep it running. the oil pressure gradually came up, light went out after 30s to 1min. Since then its done 4 runs out today (pub lunch trip and various trips for members of the family) and pressure has been fine. is this normal low pressure on cold start? or something to get checked out? Cheers. Andy ------------------------ andysteele.net 1999 VX1600 Classic
