  1. I was planning to get the kit from Redline fitted. Unfortunately I cannot get to a garage before my first hill climb. How difficult is it to fit and do I risk knocking the carbs out of balance. Is it just a couple of bolts - help needed urgently! For those that have provided photos etc - thanks. As I have a tight timescale I can't afford to mess it up!
  2. I have a head rest kit for an FIA bar (both the head rest and the steady bar). Brand new, still in their sealed bags from Caterham. Required for MSA compliance this year I believe. Supplied in error as I have the new Caged FIA bar. £20
  3. Does anyone have a photo of how this can be attached to twin 40's? Thanks
  4. Thanks guys. The head rest actually is squashed against the bar already. Any further padding would not allow the rest to fit. I can't get the seat right back as it is! I'll give it a try and see what happens!
  5. I have fitted a new style fia bar. The (pre 96) S type seats have their head rest pushed right against the bar. I assume this should suffice? I am only doing a few hillclimbs and don't want the car to look too rough around the edges
  6. Just had a new FIA bar fitted to my De dion car. The cross bracing (now a cross rather than one diagonal) fouls the head rests on my old style S type seats when the seat is right at the back against the rear bulkhead. Has anyone else had this problem and have they been able to resolve it? Perhaps the headrest "mounting rods" could be bent to tilt it forward? One notch forward on the seat solves the problem, but makes it uncomfortable to drive! Brute force will allow me to but the seat right back but I am worried I will break the seat.
  7. Are there any 7 friendly MOT stations in the area, or should I ask Redline to take it to their MOT centre? Getting there in the week is a real pain.
  8. How easy is it to fit this to a xflow with twin 40's? Can it be done with the carbs and distributor in place? Is the old standard lucas system known to fail, or should I leave it alone whilst it still seems to work?
  9. Thanks for the reassurance!
  10. Having my pilots removed on Saturday, to be replaced with something a little more sticky. I am worried that the tyre fitters may jack the car in the wrong way. How should I insist they do it to avoid bending anything? Robert Green
  11. I have now made my strut to blue book measurements. It fits to the grill very neatly, but because the grill is not 100% vertical, neither is the strut, although not far off. Is this likely to be a problem with scrutineers?
  12. I would re set your valve clearances to std super sprint figures. I think you will find that having them set this tight will cause pinking. A friend had the same prob on a newly built xflow, and read in classic ford that they had the same prob with their project engine. Both opened up the clearances to more suitable figures, resulting in a cure

    1A Tyres

I have 15" Prisoner Wheels and had decided that I would replace the elderly Pilots with CR500's. However, wanting to hillclimb this year I can't have these as they are not on the list for a roadgoing class. I was thinking of Toyo T1s as an alternative. Any other suggestions for a tyre with progressive break away on 15" rims?

  15. Will the floor surface cope with axle stands and trolly jacks underload?
  16. I am looking to do some hill climbs this year. Would a move to EBC greestuff pads be an improvement, or do they need more time to warm up than an average hillclimb allows? Would I be be better to leave the std brake pads on?
  17. I have heard from a couple of sources that I should run my super sprint xflow on 20/50 spec oil as the 10/40 is not suitable for the older design of the engine. The Caterham owners manual does recommend 10/40 though. What do people think - maybe Roger King is reading?! Mine is a AX block, if that makes any difference from the 711M.
  18. Don't forget the 10% discount as seen in Low Flying. Vouchers arrived promptly and makes it all even better value as you get the 10% of the offers as well.
  19. What needs to be done to a std super sprint to get 150-155 bhp? Is it an engine that will need to rev to 7500rpm. I would like a bit more power and at 14,500 miles I should think it will need a freshen up soon anyway, althought it isn't blowing too much oil about at present.
  20. My transnission tunnel cover came in leather from CC. Very comfortable to rest the elbows on. Quite expensive though - if CC don't do them any more go straight to OTC who I'm sure will be able to make one up.
  21. I would recommend an electric fuel pump as an aid to starting as you can pump the fuel up and then prime the carbs rather than turning a cold engine over to get the mechanical pump working - quite important if you can only use the car occasionally and the fuel evaporates away. Mine starts on the key now, even after a few weeks neglect. My oil pressure is at 5 when running at 3000rpm plus and varies between 1-2 at idle depending how hot the engine is, so yours sounds normal to me.
  22. I am certain that mine breathes through the rocker cover cap. As I don't want to go the whole way to a dry sump just yet, should I then simply fit a none breathing cap and drill a breather outlet in the rocker cover running to a catch tank? Sorry to labour what is probably quite straight forward but I don't want to create problems!
  23. Thanks for those replies. Do I assume the AX doesn't have the breather and I need to drill the rocker cover, or should I look again carefully before starting with the black and decker?
