  1. I am fitting a 20v toyota motor to my birkin. I have some concern about if the alternator is going to clear the steering shaft. I am also considering an electric waterpump That would mean that if I could find a way to mount the alternator elsewhere I would not need any belt on the front. Is this a silly idea? Has anyone done this or know of someone who does? Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. I must, I must, improve my thrust !
  2. Stick a socket and tbar on the it and crank the motor that should get it loose. If you are breaking sockets you may be using the wrong size or rubbish sockets. Maybe try a impact socket You dont want to damage the head or the bolt. But like has been said it should come off easily I used a tbar and wacked it with a rubber hammer on mine it came of on the 1st or 2nd smack.
  3. One of the racing caterham's here that had a 1800 4age fitted has replaced it with a duratek. The toyota just did not make enough power. He also broke the first one they installed. There is a company here that makes the roller barel TB's for the motors. They are branded caterham so you should be able to get them from Caterham SA. I do also happen to know who makes them for caterham localy. Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. I must, I must, improve my thrust !
  4. I had a blat in the wet today . It was educational. I don't have a weater kit and some of the other riders with weater kit was not much better of than me. My biggest problem, appart from the water. was how to keep it off the inside of the wind shield. Appart from the towel I ended up using. I was just wondering if there is a simple way to rig up a seccond wiper to the inside of the windshield. However I am not planning another run in the wet anywhere soon. the only dry spot in the car was that little bit of space between the rev counter and the peice of glass that covers it. 5. If you have a type 9 gearbox in the car and want more power get the zetec. I am fitting a 20V 4age to my car and there are many many little details that suck. See here. http://birkin7.proboards36.com/ Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. I must, I must, improve my thrust !
  6. I am bussy doing this now. Do you have a Type 9 box in the car or is this a new build ? read all about it on this web site. http://birkin7.proboards36.com/ It is a pain in the butt. If I was in the UK I would have bought the RAW bellhousing The 200 pounds for it is very reasonable, get the bolts as well. I managed to find a T50 Gearbox and it seems in good nick . But I will still need to get it checked and there sees to be a oil leak. If you get the RAW bellhousing you will also not need to worry about Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. 7. I have a 20v 4age motor and and have just found a T50 gearbox. How do I find what bellhousing is the correct one to match them? I have made a template of the gearbox face and can use that on the back of the bell housing. But if I find one that bolts onto the back of the motor and matches the gearbox does this mean it is the right one or is there more to it. Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. 8. Am doing t6he same with my car and was thinking for fitting just such a thing. Where is a good place to put it? Can it be next to the tank at the back and simply have a pipe from the tank to fill it by gravity ? I would imagine 2 pipes at the bottom - one for fuel inlet and one to connect to the pump. and 2 pipes at the top one a breather/return pipe to prevent a airlock the other a return for the fuel. Essentialy it would be an external baffle. __________ / / [ ]_/ / [ ]_/_________/ Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. I must, I must, improve my thrust !
  9. Problem found. 1 Disk 2 Pieces. Looks like it sheared of clean. Explains the brake pedal feeling fine. Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. I must, I must, improve my thrust !
  10. I feel the noise is a safety feature. You are a speck in the blind spot of any car bigger than a nissan micra. Appart from fitting a big flag to you rollbar or a flasing orange light there is not much you can do. But the noise, that rumble it get mistaken for a V8 by those who don't know and think everything without a roof if a cobra. ( it happens alot down here, mainly when filling up. I think the correct frase is " Hey Bru is vat a cobra." ) Back to my point. Sound travels around corners and allow people to hear you and have some sence that there is something they can't see. Often they will look around to see what they are missing. or simply take note that there is someting there. The noise is the best part about this car, Along with the handling, acceleration etc etc. Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. I must, I must, improve my thrust !
  11. What about the Brigestone RE540 tyre. it's one of the few performance tyres we get here. Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. I must, I must, improve my thrust !
  12. I had my car on the track today. and after about 5 laps braking hard off the main back straight. My car started pulling to the right, in a big way. I thought I had-had a blowout, agravated by the fact that as soon as I left the racing line I started feeling debris thinking I may be parts of the tyre. I managed to limp the remaining two corners back to the pits. and saw that nothing seemed wrong. I checked around but could find noting visibly wrong. I thought I may have been the break fluid boiling but the level seemed OK. I appears that the right seems to lock up when braking the pedal has also gone a little harder. I have left it to cool down and will take it for a test drive later to see if it is any better. But I think I may have seized one of the capilers. The wheels seem to rotate freely. Could thi be that the right caliper is working and the left one i seized open, surely it would seize closed and cause the wheel to lock up. Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor. 13. Have been trying to find a suitable bellhousing since 20th of dec. engine been hanging from a crane since then. Cant find the bl##dy bell housing bolts either. so have a brand new engine stand to sit on. The crane has kept it right where I left it for days on end. Have a look at Angus and tessa ' s site he has the whole front end suspended from a crane. I tried this and it worked fine but I would not try this again without lagre stands. 14. I have been told that I need to get a flywheel made to suit my application. I am fitting a type9 Box to a Toyota 20v 4age motor. I was thinking that I would use the ford clutch plate and the toyota preasure plate. to get them to work together. But I was told that if I get a flywheel made up I can get them to make a flywheel for the motor that uses the ford complete ford clutch. This sounds like solid advice, however after reading about flywheels cutting off feet or worse I am very worried to have someone make up a flywheel for me. What do I need to look for when getting someone to make me flywheel. What do I get it made from. It seems ALi is out. What is the right weight to have it made, and when balancing what do I need to look for to make sure it is balanced correctly. The company I will be asking to make this also makes custom bellhousings for the Castrol-toyota rally team. I will be using them to solve my bell housing Issue as well. 15. Connect it to either a car with a single coil and see if it works. else you can connect it to one of your wasted spark coils should give you 1/2 the correct RPM, I think. I have seen a wireing diagram for wasted spark including what you need to do for the rev counter. http://picasso.org/mjlj/?q=node/view/2 Birkin S3 Installing a Toyota 20v 4AGE motor.
