Yes spring works fine, the contacts do not move separately as they are set into the backing plate (see image in OP) that's why I asked if CC had changed them over the years as this would be a better option. Tony, adjusting the contact height with a soldering iron and/or file is not a desperate option, I have used it many times in my misspent yoof.
  7. Just found 2 old 25/5 bulbs in my "keep it just in case" box and both work okay, so I will use one of those and bin the new Halfords ones . . . . . . . . Still very strange.
  8. #7 Yes Paul, both contacts live when lights & brake switches are closed, the old bulbs work perfectly #8 Yes I have measured the pin height with calipers, position exact, same with contacts . . . . Strange
  9. # 2 Yes all cleaned & spring working as it should do, the bulb from the O/S works in it okay but both new bulbs don't work in either side # 3 Yes they are all 180 degree opposed & staggered pins # 4 As above, straight pin with one locating pin higher than the other # 5 I agree
  10. Strange question, are the current rear light bulb holders the same as the old ones (see image below) it's the pin/contact arrangement I am interested in. The units I have were fitted in 1990 and work fine but I have just had a 21/5 tail brake bulb fail and the neither of the twin pack I bought from Halfords work. Tried in both sides and only the brake filament works but they work fine in the tin top. The bulbs are both good but they seem not to locate the contacts on the tail light supply in the holder, have the contacts always been on a sprung loaded pusher plate arrangement or do some have individual sprung pins?

Old pair of LUKE of black 4 point (will take a crutch strap) harnesses, out of date for racing, they have faded a bit in the sun and could do with a clean but the buckles and all adjusters are free and work as they should do. Specification: 3 inch shoulder straps. 2 inch lap straps. Lengths (mounting bolt to buckle) Shoulder straps Min length 60cm – Max 85cm. Lap straps Min length 30cm – Max 70cm.   17. I'm a keen drag racing fan (USA not UK) and I see Clay Millican has fitted a Dragy Box to his top fueler. He is trying to top the Dragy leader board, Unfortunately the Dragy Box can't take the force of the burnout & needs to be reset

Sorry this goes on a bit but it might be of help to others who are thinking of changing their harnesses, if not you can always move on Well this turned out to be a lot more involved, not to mention expensive than I originally envisaged. Thanks to everyone who offered help, recommendations, advice and even sent me spec sheets of their set ups, that was very helpful. I was adamant pull down was the answer to my problems, how wrong was I? A helpful local owner suggested I tried his S3 with that set up, the result was bruised ribs for my passenger and the frustration of having to keep getting out of the car to re attach the half door. What was needed was a longer strap between the mounting & the adjuster on the lap strap to clear the slot in the Tilletts. So to cut a long story short I am keeping with pull up, I looked at all the leading brands and it was between the Schroth & the TRS in the end & upon close inspection, without doubt the best quality (& most expensive), were the Schorth harnesses, softer webbing, neat small buckles which are removable (see image below) in seconds for fitting & cleaning the belts, a really clever idea IMO & smoother adjusters, they really are a great bit of kit and I notice that Caterham recommend them for race cars. Demon Tweeks stock the Schroth Caterham II ASM Harness and Dave Kimberly was very helpful and patient when I bombarded with all my stupid questions. Bit of a tip if you’re a cheapskate like me, I wanted 6 point which was an additional £180 for the pair so I took a punt and left the crutch straps off the order and . . . . . . . . . lo and behold, my old Luke crutch straps fit perfectly in the lower buckle slot. With regard to the Luke harnesses which I have put up with 2 sets for 20+ years, they really are naff compared with what’s readily available today, the buckles are large and cumbersome, as are the adjusters that really are not fit for purpose & make adjusting in either direction a right pain. It’s as if Luke have a product that sells and cannot be bothered or see fit to improve upon it. Well that's it, thanks again BlatChat and here is the removable buckle - Guy
