  1. Ian, Could it be Urquharts in Vauxhall Road off Bedford Road/Frenchmans Road? Ta, Nick
  2. Title says it all really. KwikFit tried to sell me one 1.5x the size, other garages give me the look. What should I pay for such? Thanks all.
  3. You a 'hard man' in the rain, top down in silver grey 7 heading west on B2022 from Purley to Epsom near Woodmansterne around 9.30am this morning. Good to see the elements hadn't put you off.
  4. Mr 7 Wonders, is the battery still available and where are you based?
  5. A grey/silver with 7 grille going west around 9am today. Me in Mable plodding along as usual.......
  6. You gave it some revs outside the Shell garage around 11.30am as I was kicking the tyres of my tin top. Sounded good
  7. OK starter for ten.......... Thinking ahead about track days I am unsure what my xflow is likely to push out noise wise. It has a 160bhp 1760cc hill climb engine, otherwise exhaust system is stock Caterham issue 4 into 1 of 1996 vintage breathing via twin 40DCOEs on 34mm chokes. Any guesses? Rather than turn up to one of these and get ejected is there a reliable test I can do beforehand eg a club meet? Now based in wind swept and rain lashed Surrey but car currently in Winchester.
  8. Thanks for responses. So low quality = high sulphur content it would appear. I'll stay with Shell an dthe like for safety then.
  9. Just bought a Jag XJ8 which has an early batch V8 with Nikasil liners. Currently all seems OK though they are prone to bore wear with poor quality (low sulphur?) fuels. They changed the bores to steel liners in 2000 To avoid potential for disaster are there any fuels that should be avoided? I use Shell in Chandlers Ford a lot as it's v cheap for area, occasionally ASDA too.
  10. Re the Banner battery, my 20A jobbie has just expired and am seeking another to fit the Cat's (std) cradle. Where is best place to source from (based Surrey/Hants) and is exchange possible? How much are these items?
  11. Yes it's my spare 1700 and the A6 cammed 1760 Nick Chan special is still screaming away nicely. Still watching oil consumption though as seemed to use a bit between the engine swap in May and final tune in August ie 2 litres in 750m but this could be due to low oil pressure problem and replacement of the PRV by Redline. Settled more last time but haven't driven it for a month so will do final check this weekend then put her to bed for winter. When the 7 Workshop swapped them over I asked if the chassis was in good condition. "Fine" said Chris, "in fact the oil that's been leaking from the engine has preserved it nicely". So I think it's time for a rebuild plus I want to improve my knowledge. And there I was resisting any attempt to upgrade beyond forged pistons when already Mr Morris is enticing me with goodies! What is the standard issue 1700 cam, is it a 244? How worn is the 254 you have Dave? Nick
  12. I have the Covercraft which I think is the Caterham item which is damn good. I kept the 7 outside in London for 3 years and it kept the car like new. But I need a cheaper cover for my Jag which sits under a yew tree and is getting carped on so interested to see responses re cheaper items.
  13. Dear all, I am going to rebuild my xflow over the winter and as it's my first attempt I need a pretty good guide as to what to do. Is there a definitive book available for tuning xflows (rather like David Vizzard's tome for Minis) to which I can refer to for component choice as well as the rebuild itself? I'll be using a friend's workshop so hopefully will have necessary tools, but I severely lack expertise. As a minimum I will upgrade to forged pistons but will try to resist going too manic (yeah right!) as it's for road use. I have twin 40 carbs also that I will rebuild as part of the package and seek similar guidance. If I buy a Weber rebuild kit does this provide sufficient information for a numpty?
  14. Use it as a boat anchor? It would put a hole in the ocean floor! This reminds me how close I got to losing the plot once.........I got very frustrated with a particular company's service and was going to charter a light aircraft and drop a gearbox through the factory roof!
  15. Wassa 'clarke type'? Has it got wheels? Hast du ein photo? And, er, where are you situated? I'm south London/Surrey/Winchester/Gerrards Cross
  16. Need to put my spare crossflow engine on sthg other than my dads wheelbarrow which it is now in. Do I go for an engine hoist which with wheels and crane arm appears best choice or is an engine stand or trolley better longer term? As it may be a year or more before I attempt a strip down and rebuild, which do people recommend? Any good products and what should I consider paying? Suggestions gratefully received.
  17. There are plenty of cracking routes but I wouldn't advertise them on here!
  18. You going west in a convoy of 3 or 4 historics, looked like BRG/yellow S3 or ealy Caterham around 5pm, me heading east to Petersfield, then Goodwood. Lovely evening.
  19. Dear Sir, Are you one of them Luddites?
  20. Correction: X350 should read X308 as former relates to current model while X308 relates to older shape but with V8 engines. anyone have any pointers?
  21. Comparing AO21s with 48s if driven 95% on road which will last longer? I'm currently at 6,500m on my 21s which are near the limit so will soon replace. Would consider CR500s but running 14" rims.
  22. Currently running a 94 3.2L Gold XJ40 which is a lovely old girl but sadly gives me back ache plus she needs valve stem seals doing (£1,000 if outsourced). Averages 24mpg if I'm nice to her. With the newer XJ series 3.2s (X300 straight 6 and X350 V8) can I expect better comfort/more supportive seats? And improved fuel consumption? I think the X300 had same straight 6 power plant as XJ40 but wondered if fuel metering better; I'm sure the V8 however had better power and fuel cons. Anyone in the know about these things?
  23. Really miffed I missed this but had to cancel to flat hunt all weekend. Was the weather kind to you up there?
  24. Cripes we discovered the B3081 😳 😳 😳. Who put those hairpins there?!?!? I will keep a look out for meets then.
