  1. Dear All Many thanks for the advice. I have just had the bonnet off and I have noticed that some of the cement used by caterham midland to seal the exhaust after the rebuild is missing and there are black deposits in its place. Could this be the leak mentioned by Roger? If so should I repair immediately or wait for the service and tune? Ade Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent
  2. Dear All Katie the 1600 X-flow has just recently developed some occasional problems that I am not sure about. Katie is a little overdue for a service and then I was planning a rolling road tune. Firstly - on braking I sometimes get one or two exhaust pops. When it occurs it does not make any difference if I am changing down. It is very intermittent. Secondly - when applying the go-faster pedal, I sometimes encounter what I can only describe as a hesitance in the engine as if it does not want to rev higher than 3500 and I am getting a 'lag' type feel. To accompany this the engine blips and falters. Again this seems to be intermittent (at the moment) as my return journey seemed fine although I was not pushing the car as much on the outward journey. I am still too much of an engine no-brainer to have a clue as to what may be going on and if I should be in a panic or not. Any suggestions (polite) gratefully welcome. 3. Hello All I am contemplating my first oil change for 'Katie the 1600 Xflow'. The only thing I am not sure about is that Katie is fitted with an accusump where right now I would prefer to see a heater. The question is am I going to have any issues getting the oil out of the accusump or will it naturally drain out as the rest of the oil drains out of the engine? Any comments greatfully received. Also...Is Caterham the place to go for replacement brake pads or can I get them from regular retailers etc? I dont want any fancy greenstuff pads, just the regular sort (whatever they may be). Many Thanks Ade teeth.gif Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent

  5. I am driving my 7 pretty much all weathers and although I am trying to avoid serious downpours I have been caught out a couple of times and my car has also been standing around in light rain. is this going to cause me a problem with my K&N twin air filters. I took them off and cleaned and re-oiled them recently and I have resprayed them with K&N oil since but is there anything I should be thinking about (apart from not driving my 7) to protect the airfilters or is a regualr re-oiling sufficient. Brake pads

Surely having the best brake pads in the world is all for nothing if your tyres are pants. I was talking to the puffmeister and he (seemed)to say that I should be more bothered about getting the right tyres when it came to sprinting. if I have mis-quoted you puffy just let me know! 7. A few days ago someone reversed into my 7, cracking the nose cone. The replacement nose has arrived which is a standard pattern/fibreglass/yellow, what I thought would be an exact replacement for the original nose. the good news is that when trying the nose up against the car it actually seems to fit better. The bad news is that my '7' grill that I salvaged off the old nose cone does not come anywhere near to fitting. has anyone any ideas as to why that may be? 8. Will the scrutineers fail a helmet simply on age or is it the condition of the helmet the thing they will be looking at. My brother has generously donated an arai helmet that he used to use for my trackday use but he tells me that it is out of date for sprinting. The condition is excellent apart from two 4mm sq areas where the white paint is scratched off. I am not questioning what my brother has told me but I am getting the impression that people are using fairly 'old' lids. Or is it just my interpretation of old? smile.gif Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent

  11. Many thanks for info, just need to phone the wife to see if she can lend me a piece of chalk from her classroom and the use of her tin-top. I notice there was no word on the alternative bulbs. Is it because I am being too much of a Big Jesse wanting light when I am driving at night or should all 7 drivers be able to see in the dark aswell as leap over tall buildings (or some might say - pick up said tall building and walk underneath)teeth.gif
  12. I noticed driving home last night that one of my headlamps is not set correctly and I have no idea (a) how to adjust them and (b)How to know when I have got it right. confused.gif Also - I think I have got the standard bulbs fitted and they dont seem very good at dipped. Does anybody use different sorts of bulbs etc. And if I start getting replies about tulips and daffs I wont be impressed! teeth.gif
  13. I dont know about anyone else but when Im on-line I spend a lot of time going backwards and forwards between the tech page and chit-chat. Would it be possible to have a button to toggle directly between the two sites as my poor mouse is complaining about ALL that extra clicking. Lazy? Me? 15. Dear J I must be desperate as I was reading your reply and thinking - mmmmm that could work. I do not want to appear ungrateful but I was hoping for some suggestions that incorporated buttons/heating element/built in fan connected together in a genius yet simple fashion that an engineering idiot like me could fashion out of tin foil and sticky back plastic.
  16. Does anyone know (roughly) what I should be paying Arch Motors for a replacement ali side skin? The car is having the other panels replaced already and some chasis work and therefore the car is going fully stripped eek.gif down. Also ... The space in my car where I would normally have a fresh air heater is occupied by an accusump. has anyone experimented, successfully or otherwise with any other methods of providing cabin heat! Thanks smile.gif Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent

  19. I recently had a very similar problem with my 1600 xflow. I was convinced I had oiling plugs and various other maladies with the basic problem of turning over but not firing and a buzzing from under my dash. the answer was a faulty kill switch which was only properly connected when turned past the usual 'on' position. Vibrations from a fast blat nudged the switch just out of position with the result as described. Mr car actually died in mid-blat once. I dont know if you have a kill switch but this might be worth a look. Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent

    Car Covers

Sorry to be a house anorak but.... Even in living rooms that you would think is bone dry there are lots of sources of moisture vapour. If you have a gas fire then water vapour is a large by product of the combustion of natural gas. Also if you allow breathing in your living room, this also provides a large source of water vapour. Hints & Tips: Don't allow breathing in your living room except at weekends and on special occasions and try not to use any gas fire unless the snow is banked up against the windows. oil pressures

my 7 has a 16oo cross-flow. When first switched on my car indicates 4 bar. Once warmed up it reads 1.5 bar at idle and 4 bar on anything above 3000 revs. Is this normal or is this high? I also am finding a quantity of oil sitting on the oil filler cap and down the side of the rocker cover next to it. Not very much but enough for me to think that something may be up. There may be no link but I was recently on a track day at Cadwell Park (thank you Slipstream)and my car was refusing to restart after a session on the track without my cleaning the plugs. This was something I did not and have not since experienced in general road use. Any ideas greatly apreciated Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent
  22. I had a bet in the office that the first reply would be from my big brother! Dont you have anything better to do than surfing the tech pages. Shouldnt you be chopping legs off and stuff Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent
  23. I have just taken ownership of a 1600 x-flow and the rubber fuel lines to the 40 webers are a little perished and require replacement. can someone tell me what dia hose I need and if it is freely available from a good parts shop. I am also experiencing a very intermittent electrical fault when I go over bumps. there is an audible 'shorting' sound coming from under the dash combined with my engine faltering. Could this have something to do with my safety cut out handle? Also... My car is fitted with an accusump. This includes a hose from the engine running to a metal box/tank attached low down to the drivers bulkhead and a hose from this to what I think is a regular catch tank. Could someone explain what I am looking at? Thanks very much. Make the world a better place, hug an estate agent
