  1. Until it dribbles out of the filler hole. However, if you plan on chucking the car around a lot and/or trackdays then the usual school of thought is to 'overfill' it the minimise the effects of oil surge and potential diff failure. So jack it up at the back - as high as you like and keep pouring the oil in - just keep a watch out then for oil seal failure and contaminated rear brake shoes!!! Hope that helps

Hi Steve Yes I believe it does look like the picture - if it is the original part - I also have a spare of the other type of housing from the Fiesta which was the recommended way to do the sealed system. I am just about to pop out to the garage to check for you - let me have a contact number and I'll give you a call then we can sort a meet. Dave

  7. On the A3 going north about 9.00am this morning. Gave you the thumbs up - We were in the old Grey/Cream Landy going to Slab Common for some 4x4ing - pity you can't drive two cars at a time - so the 7 stayed at home!!

Steve I have no idea what Powerspeed use but I am over in Wimborne and have a huge roll of basalt fibre which I bought a few years back for repacking my exhaust and you are welcome to a big handful of that - I am sure it will more than tide you over. It works fine, and I got this for next to nothing - unlike some of the prices being charged by others for basically the same stuff. Email me if you want to pop over as I am around all week. Dave
  9. Hi Cskip I did this a long time back - The expansion tank is a Rover item (metro maybe?) I probably have the part number somewhere on the old receipt. I mounted the expansion tank on the bulkhead as I don't have a heater and it sits just above the engine level - brilliant mod and never given a moments trouble. I used silicon pipe from Burtons to plumb the whole thing up. I think you may be local (ish) to me so if you want a look/see I am in Wimborne - give me a shout. Cheers Dave
  10. Wingnonut Glad to hear it's all uptogether now - motorbike chain oil in a srpay can - brilliant stuff and little mess too!! Andy_h - I rebuilt mine in just over a year!! I had a bet with one of my sons - we were at Breamore House car show in July 2006 (I had re-claimed by 2a in late May) and I casually said I would have it at the following year's show - he bet me £50 that I wouldn't - 'nuff said - it was there!!!! Mind you it cost me a lot more that the bet to complete it. I have a million photos and I could write a book! I am only over near Poole - I could bring mine over and show you as an incentive ;-), if you like!!! Dave

Andy_h I used the stuff that Hammerite make - I think they just call it 'special metals primer' or something like that - it is water based so easy to spray but to be honest I don't think the Hammerite is a good today as years ago as it does seem to chip fairly easily - so if I was doing it again I think I would search around (maybe marine paint manufacturers?) a bit more to get something tougher. Having said all that Richards, who made the chassis, said that overpainting was unnecessary (and judging by the amount of galv they are right!!) so it was mainly for cosmetic purposes as if it rusts out again in my lifetime I'll be 103!!!! Try the series2club - some of those guys have found other stuff to use on their chassis Good luck with the rest of the rebuild - I'm just refurb'ing a fairey overdrive - well can't do any more to the 7!! regards Dave

Andy H Yes we could go on for days (more like months!!) - I did not have to do any work to the steering box (renewed everything else though) and in fact it has one of the best 'play-free' steering setups I have ever encountered on an old Landy - mine's one of the first (proper - headlights in the grill!!) 2a's built originally in 1961. I bought the chassis from Richards and overpainted it with black Hammerite - mainly for appearance (after first coating with a special primer). I figured if the old chassis had managed to last 45 years then the galv one should last for ever - well at least another 45 years and by then I'll be pushing up the daisies and it will be my grandchildrens' problem. If you know what the bearing is there is a supplier in Parkstone, Poole (Ashley Bearings) who may be able to source it - I have used then lots over the years for bearings and seals for my 7, which is Live Axle (Ital). By the way do you go to the 7 club meets at Cadnam - I don't usually but am planning to be there next Tuesday - if you are there we can talk series 2 (LR not Lotus!) regards Dave
  13. Wingonut Just a few things to watch out for which may help. I have recently fully restored a Series 2a SWB on a galv chassis and bought a set of springs from Paddocks. My experiences (and I could write a book over the rebuild and the quality of parts - you think Caterham can be 'fun'.... anyway...) are as follows - you are correct re left and right. You may find the dowel in the centre of the spring does not fit the hole in the axle (I had to drill one of mine out) and once you get the spring fitted you may find that you cannot re-fit the shock absorber, even when all the weight is on the spring - these new springs do settle but they seem to be (depending on source and they may be better if they are from Craddocks - just depends where they source them from!) too 'arched' during manufacture. Also as said don't tighten anything fully until it is back on its wheels - and use gallons of coppaslip - you never know when you may need to take it apart again ;-) A good source of help/info is www.series2club.co.uk (I know yours is an S3 but they are pretty much the same if on leaf springs!). Oh and recheck all the nuts/bolts after you have driven it for a few miles - well it is a Land Rover. regards Dave
  14. Bought mine from James Whiting a few years and several thousand miles ago (and several track days too). I think he supplied Green Stuff pads with them and did an offer on the standard discs at the time. The difference in stopping power is phenominal. I am still on the original pads and there has been no degradation in them. Guess you have to ask yourself why you want them? In my case the car felt dangerous on the standard set up and once I had upgraded the engine it was lethal. You won't regret it! Dave
