  1. I'm replacing both sets of front wheel bearings. With the hub off, if I grab the stub axle and lift, I can feel quiet a lot of play in the lower spherical bearing. It clunks within the socket on the wishbone.

    i) Can I re-tighten these, or will I need to replace?

ii) If replacement needed, is it worth replacing the wishbone/chassis bushes whilst they're off the car?

iii) Would play in these be obvious? or how to check?

iV) What about the top spherical bearings? Is this likely to be worn also?

There's obviously a lot of pressure on these components especially during hard breaking. The cars done about 27,000 miles in 8 years.

    Thanks for help *thumbup*

  2. Toby, I hope you'll give some feedback on how the changeover effects the car. I'm also considering a LSD as next upgrade, and would be interested in your views.

  3. I had a similar reaction last year going from Avon ZV1's to R888s. The car was/is much more lively to steer. The toe in was reduced to 0 deg, but this didn't reduce the bumping around. I was probably using too high a pressure at 1st, but now use 16psi.

I think it's something I've just got used to now and it's not a problem.

  4. Success!!

I've done the rope trick and changed the valve cap and collets. The engine's back together and running quietly ( only 98db ). I fashioned a spring compessor from the handle of a skipping rope and used a rachet baggage strap around the engine to pull it down. Worked a treat. Getting the collets back in was a bit fiddly until Oily suggested I use a dob of grease on the end of a small screwdriver.

I thought I was going to have to take the head off, in which case I'd have done a 1.8 upgrade at the same time. That'd put the car out of action quiet a while, and I'd have missed Curborough sprint. So I'm really pleased with this result.

I wasn't aware that the caps could pull through like this, but having now seen the full steel ones, alongside the Rover pressed jobbies, I'm definately going to change the whole lot when an opportunity comes along.

So thanks to all for the advice. Saved my season, and a lot of ££££££. 😬 😬

Now, who on BC know how to change the weather?

  5. I've had a loud tapping from the top end of my 1.6K, since Oulton Park track day. I thought it was a follower again ( Had this problem last year ), so I've removed the cams to check/replace them. On close inspection, the No 7 exhaust valve spring retaining cap, is sitting above the level of the valve stem. I don't understand how this can happen, unless the colets have moved. The follower is hitting the cap as well as the top of the valve stem. The valve itself, is sitting at the same height as all the others.

How the valve hasn't fallen into the cylinder, I don't know. The car runs fine, just taps away noisily.

Anyway, does this have to be a head off job to repair, or can I somehow compress the valve spring, and reset the colets/spring cap without doing so? Has anyone else had this problem?

    Cheers, Clive

  7. Will,

Interesting solution. Would like to see some photo's. I assume this cuts off your rear view quiet a lot, but with good side mirrors it'll be okay.

Much better than running home on trackworn tyres.
