Spent all day soldering etc... and at 10pm actually started her up 😬 😬 😬 I'm currently running one of the supplied maps - 1600 k series with SS cams and standard plenum, but my engine is the following spec: 1600 k with Caterham std. plenum, 4-2-1 exhaust and standard cams, EU3 (so wasted spark - not that I think that bit makes any difference). Does anyone have a map to suit, if it includes the ignition advance for not using the IACV, even better.   5. Had the same problem, got so bad on motorways that I had to change the steering rack - which fixed it instantly. It seems to be a problem with the rack getting stiff when not moved for a while, the only way to free it up is to put your back into it and wrench it from side to side. Very frightening when you want to go around a corner on the M-way. Caterham have not yet agreed to cover the cost of the new rack for me...   7. I'm really worried about the state of the site in terms of the speed since the downtime today, and since the search facility has gone offline. I don't know about the speed issue, but I might be able to help with the database stuff as I have a reasonable amount of experience in it.   9. Thanks oily, I've just spoken to Carl at Emerald who only didn't send me the plug cos he thought I wanted to rewire the loom. So I should have it tomorrow 😬 😬 😬 😬 I've spoken to you in the past about running with or without the IACV and I've decided to go without. As far as I understand I can do it by turning the idle screw on the throttle a bit and then increasing the advance just below the idle speed, so that when it does drop below the advance speeds it up again. So now my stupid question is, which of the 2 air tubes that come out of the air intake between the filter and the throttle butterfly is the one I need to blank off for the IACV? I'm thinking that if I can't get the MEMS plug: -get 1 female and 2 male 60 pin connectors from rs/maplin/cpc -cut off old loom plug and wire it into 1 of the male connectors - thus making an adaptor -wire the loom with the female connector -wire the emerald connector up to the other male connector making another adaptor Then I should be able to switch back and forth between them without much trouble - does this seem like a good idea? Or Maybe I could get an old EU3 ecu from a scrappy and butcher that for the plugs - how much do they cost?   11. (Sorry if this turns into another saga like Qu 1) but... Got my emerald now, all raring to go, but, sadly as I have an EU3 there is quite a bit of wiring to do. Whilst I've got all the instructions for wiring etc, I've only got the plug to go with the emerald, what I was hoping for was the bits to make an adaptor so I wouldn't have to butcher my old loom, and would be able to swap straight back to the GEMS if required. For this I need 2 sockets the same as the ones on the ECU, does anyone know where to get them and if so what to ask for? Sorry for being a pedant, but Cyanide is an inhibitor of one of the enzymes in the respiratory chain, whereas CO binds more strongly to haemoglobin than oxygen does, thus starving your cells of oxygen.   13. I know that a number of people have a laminova fitted to cool oil. Is there any reason for choosing this over a separate oil "radiator"? I'm wanting to fit an oil cooler as I get reasonably hot oil on track and want to cool it down a bit so I can stay out longer! I know that a laminova will help to heat up the oil to operating temperature faster too, but I'm not sure I want that as it will make the water take longer to heat up.   14. Yes, I have tried resetting it, by taking out the FIA key. I replaced the lambda probe as well, which fixed it for about 100 miles, before the new one coked up too - this has made me think that it's one of the other sensors, but don't know which...   18. use a combination of: sandwich plate & 2 head gaskets 1.6 crank 1.8 pistons and some prit-sticked piston head extensions to make up for the over-decompression of the 1.8 pistons with the 1.6 crank. all this should give you an "A" for effort and a "D" for reliability! 😬 😬 😬 Seriously though, I seem to recall reading that the sandwich plate thing doesn't work very well... On a more useful note, what is the setup in the new mini cooper s? Perhaps there is the potential for part-pinching from here? My (returning) overfuelling problem has spurred me into ordering an Emerald. - When I phoned rover and spoke to them I had to negotiate with the manager to pursuade them to look at a seven as opposed to a tin-top, and then they still couldn't do it for 2 weeks. I'm convinced that my overfuelling is caused by a faulty sensor, but without replacing all of them, or stealing the right software & cables from rover to hack into my ECU, I can't tell which one it is. I don't like stuff I can't fix myself, in fact I don't own many things that I can't at least have a go at fixing myself, so I've decided to bite the bullet and get an emerald, so I can see exactly what information the ecu is getting. Reading through the manuals, to just aquaint myself with the system I was wondering if there are some general rules of thumb about altering your mapping. I understand that running too lean will result in detonation & high temperatures, and that running rich cokes up everything and runs cooler, but what different results do you get from changing the spark timing?Also, are there some characteristic signs that make you say aha! this is sparking too early, or this is underfuelling at this engine speed etc...? I apologise in advance for what will most likely be many stupid questions along these lines, probably ending up with an ad in the wanted section for a new engine, after destroying the last one through messing about with the map!   22. Nick, you asked me to let you know if I fixed the running rough when cold problem (see running out of fuel almost thread)... well I did. I took out one of the plugs and found it was black - overfuelling, this would make sense as it's fine at higher engine speeds - when it needs the extra fuel. So I took out the lambda probe and that was also very black, cleaned it up and put it back in, ran for 30 seconds, took it out and it was black again! Ran the car without the lambda probe (get you home mode) and it was fine, so I started the (Sunday morning) wild goose chase for a new one. Finally managed to get a pattern parts one (£45 as opposed to 100). Anyone who did supply the bosch one didn't seem to have one, or wasn't open, so I tried the pattern one and it works fine. It now idles perfectly and after running for 10 mins the probe was still clean instead of being sooty. Im just going to have to go for a serious blat to clean up the spark plugs. Had a chance to get a decent look at it this weekend, from looking at the spark plugs, it seems to be over fuelling that is causing the problem (I guess this is why it's fine at higher revs) - the plugs are very black. So I scratched my head for a while wondering what makes an ECU'd car overfuel and I decided on the lambda probe in the exhaust. When I took this out it was very black too. Unfortunately, never having seen one before I don't know whether this is how they're supposed to look. Does anyone know how I can tell if it's dead or not?   25. Peter, I know exactly what you mean, I have the same problem when I drive my dad's cavalier with very servo assisted brakes. Because the resistance to my foot is so light (in this case due to the power assist, rather than the setup you have) it is very difficult to modulate correctly and get the smooth on-smooth off effect I'm looking for. As there is very little resistance to my foot, and it has an inertia-reel seatbelt I slide forwards onto the brake more, so I end up braking much harder than I want to. I have always been of the opinion that if your brakes are capable of locking your wheels at 100mph then they are good enough to stop the car. Any upgrades after that should be to reduce fade and increase feedback. Ironically as you are suggesting, increasing feedback doesn't necessarily mean making them easier to push! I think ideally you want the brake to engage immediately you put any pressure on it, but there should be some travel between gently applied and fully applied. The travel should be progressive too, so that the closer you get to maximum travel, the harder the brakes are to press.
