  1. So.. In my efforts to find an annoying click from the front O/S as the wheel rotates, I find the front O/S disc is warped. Replace both today and discover the front O/S inner bearing seal is perished. There is still a small amount of movement in the disc as it rotates. This means it will eventually warp the disc, so I need to sort this perished seal.

So.. What's involved? Whole new hub assembly? Both sides obviously... Or what? .. Sounding expensive already.

    Help!

  2. The actual offence wording is  " Fails to conform to regulations" , which also includes having no plate fitted, ( see link from Jonathan) but is also is referred as "Miss representation" particularly when font, size and spacing is altered and fails to conform. The real world test is whether the plate can be easily read by eye or an ANPR camera and prosecution in such cases is often a matter of the discretion of the Police Officer who stops you. Of note, you only llikely to be stopped for this offence by a Traffic cop as local guys and girls are either too busy or not familiar with the regulations.

The offence is dealt with by way of a non endorsabe ( ie no points) fine of £100 if dealt with at the roadside; you would receive paperwork and later a conditional fine of £100 in the post.( conditional in that you must admit the offence and pay, if not you get a court date)  A referral is sent to DVLA and if the same driver continues to drive with an illegal number plate, ie is caught twice or more and DVLA receive multiple notifications, DVLA can rescind the number plate and Re issue an age related plate to the car. This is a particular ouch for someone who has spent thousands on a private plate and has altered it by font or spacing for example especially as DVLA can sell the plate again to a new owner and are under no obligation to give a refund to the original owner. Lesson being, don't take the whatsit.

If there are aggravating circumstances, for example multiple offences or the plate has been altered by say black tape for the purposes,of avoiding detection by speed cameras or ANPR, then the matter can go to court and the maximum fine increases to £1000 for the plate offence, whilst other offences such as Obstruct Police or Pervert the Course of justice could be considered.

  3. Thanks for the comments folks. Elie, that's really interesting and helpful.

As it happens I took mine out yesterday and found a quiet, long well sighted bit of road and tried braking as hard as I could with no one in sight and found I could brake a heck of a lot harder than I thought I could with no hint of locking up. Seems the standard discs, ( with Mintex 144 )  is perfectly good enough for me. Just need to stop being a tart about how the discs look and I'll be fine!!

  4. Sorted... It seems the disc is warped..rather a lot. Donughts to anyone who suggested this. Collection only as the post wouldn't be good!

I now have another problem... 2 new standard discs to go with my Mintex pads ( about £100 fitted, add £300 for an uprated master cylinder ) or a whole new updated brake kit, ( ventilated discs 4 pot callipers, updated master cylinder £1126:00 fitted  )

I may have to do another thread for advice on that one!!!

  5. Ok folks.. thanks for ideas... Process of elimination.... It's not a stone or nail in tyres as happens both on

13s and 15 inch wheel/ tyre combinations.. Ditto loose weights on wheel rims. Too much coincidence for both sets.... tis not loose wheel nuts.. They get torqued before every trip. I don't have spinning centre caps so that's out..

I think it must be pad related as it stops when I brake.

So. Jonathan, SM25T and Tom..... Donughts still available!

  6. It's interesting none the less. It shows no real difference until about 100mph . I had imagined the difference would be noticed at lower speeds, say 60 +mph. Since the national speed limit is 60 for single carriageways...oh hum.......
