Spare wheel fixing bolt

Recommended Posts

The bolt holding the spare wheel passes through the skin and is captured by the nut which I think is welded to the chassis. The problem is that over the years the bolt has damaged the ali skin where it passes through.

I notice that on more recent cars, there is a polished metal jobby which surrounds the hole and protects the skin. Anyone know if these can be retrofitted or does it entail removing the old nut from the chassis first?

Hi Stewart,

Yes Iam interested, but how does the bush fix to the chassis? As I say, there is already an internal nut fitted behind the skin, but I don't know how the external bush interfaces with this - it indeed it does.

Is the bush threaded to take the T bolt, and how is it attached to the chassis?

Thanks

Colin, thanks - I'm getting there bit by bit *biggrin* So, in order to fit the half nut, do I need to remove the existing nut, or does that remain in place to hold the T bolt once the bolt has passed through the bush?
