New Cat
Hi, please can someone let me know what the oil capacity is of a De-dion Ford Differential. Its a 3.92 ZF LSD (not that that should make any difference!) Thank You

AlanB
Just had my AP lsd repalced by ZF guts. Took around 1.5 litres to fill. More than the I thought - I only had 1l to start with.... HTH, Alan
Luke Beaumont
While we're on the subject, Phil Stewart recommended me the Ford diff oil as fitted to LSD Capris for my ZF, but he didn't have the Ford part number to hand. Can anyone oblige?
New Cat
Thanks guys, suspicions confirmed. I had the ramps/preload changed on the diff by Phil Stewart and asked him what oil to use. He sold me a litre of the Ford oil, which sounds like won't be enough!
Luke Beaumont
He'd ran out when I collected my diff. Could you read the number off your bottle, pretty please?
Bemeco
Hello An ignorant Caterham owner with ZF LS diff wonder what type of diff I am using. Its stamped on top ZF, sold by Caterham (delivered instead of a standard Ford diff), 3.92 gearing. fordy
diff oil is Ford EP90. I forget the p/n, but there is only one motorcraft EP90.
Chelspeed
Bemeco - In Caterham talk a ZF diff is a clutch plate type LSD. These are older style units than the AP Suretrac and Quaife Torsen diffs but they are still the favoured design for motorsport. Advantages are that they are adjustable for preload and ramp angle to tailor them for your car and driving style plus they fully lock when required even if one wheel is in the air (ie kerb hopping, lifted out of a hairpin). Disdvantages are that the clutch packs need periodic replacement and they need special oil. So if your diff has a ZF stamp on it then it will still be a diff designed to Ford specifications to fit a Ford Sierra. But then: Either 1) at some point, either during manufacture or after but before you got it, it will have been fitted with a ZF LSD, good news. Or 2) ZF is a parts supplier to Ford and they make some of the standard diffs for Ford. Which means you have a standard diff which just happens to have been made by a company called ZF. I suspect the first.
AlanB
Luke, I'll check the number this evening. It's specific oil for lsds.
New Cat
Sorry Luke, if I had the bottle to hand I'd give you the part number but unfortunatley I've put the bottle in the garage with the car - some way away from home or work ☹️
