Terry Field
What dictates whether clearances should be set hot or cold. I always set my old 1600 Xflow hot, but the spec for my new 1700 calls for them to be set cold 🤔 Terry 🤔 Q783 OOR. Team Lotus colours with flares. xflow7
I would set them based upon the recommendation of the supplier. Having said that, I asked my engine builder about this a while back, and he told me that in the case of a xflow with iron head, there's almost no difference in measurements done when hot and done when cold. Note, I haven't confirmed that myself. Dave Edited by - xflow7 on 18 Feb 2005 16:26:
Bare
Most OEM workshop Manuals give both Hot and Cold clearances.. and specifies what temp the engine must be below to be considered 'Cold'. Either method gives the correct lash at running temp.. If you've only got Cold clearance #'s then do it after a night's cool down.

neilsjuke
Cold as the temp would change as you work your way along the valves.
Joe 90
On xflows the confusion comes from the fact that Ford specify hot for standard cams, but the SS cam manufacturers (Piper and Kent at least) specify cold. If in doubt about the cam fitted, I would suggets cold. SEP field working, not spotted in 103,100 miles.
