Jingers
need to know if there is an alternative/equivalent axle to the Ford RS2000 used in the UK available in Canada/USA? if so what car is it from and what years? Jingers
Bob Simon
I assume you mean the differential unit? Check the Mercury XR4TI. It's the only North American car with a Type 9 gearbox as well. -Bob 95 HPC VX
Jingers
Hi Bob, I actually mean't a Live axle (the whole thing). I'm importing my car from the UK to Canada and have a Zetec to drop into the car when it arrives and need to get an axle to take the power. was hoping to get one in canada or will have to source one from the uk later this year FTD Moreton in Marsh, International 1994 membership No.86xx Edited by - Jingers on 28 Sep 2004 18:24:
MarkClow
I am having a '7' built in the USA and I am using RX7 parts because the early 80s RX7 GSL has limited slip differential and rear disks. For more information look at the Yahoo Group 'Locosts USA' (or similiar). Mark
Bob Simon
Sorry, The RS2000 had independent rear suspension like the XR4TI(Sierra). I thought you were looking for a centre section. What you need is a stout live axle. You might take a look at the ford pinto unit. I've seen a few turbocharged 200HP+ 2.3 liter engines that weren't able to crack one. Don't know about track width and such, but parts and aftermarket ring & pinions are plentifull... If you're looking for a bolt in, I think the std. Ital axle from Caterham is your only choice... -Bob 95 HPC VX
Bare
There were about 12 Xrti 's sold in North America and mercifully most if not all have long gone to the Crusher :-) Mazda RX7 IS a good available choice: Light , Strong and with LSD.. Disc brakes are Huge but essentiaslly Useless Being far too heavy (vented) and as we all know Handbrakes are rarely 'done well' onna disc brake car.. UNLESS they have a built in Drum Brake as well. Suggest Drum braked units as lighter. Also Torsen Diffs from a Miata 'R' type from the wreckers.. simply Bolt In.. Wheel track is approx 55".. using significant offset on the Rims, as the measured (Myself !) distance from wheel mounting face to face is approx 58" ! This can be an issue if unexpected. Not an adaptation Job for the feint of Heart.. but definitely a Robust well made unit, for almost no $$.
PaulD
What about the old RWD Toyota Corolla? I know that they were impoted into the 'States and must be a similar size to the Escort. Paul
Ferrino
Apparently the AE86 ('85-'87 RWD Corolla) axle is a good fit, yes. Not sure how easy they are to source in the US, but pretty tricky here, especially as there is so much demand for the donor car itself (driftaz). Apparently more robust than the Ford (think the halfshaft bearing design is better too) and you can get them with LSDs as standard.
tom7
ISTR the 16 valve car (with LSD) was the Corolla SE5 in the US, came in both hatch and hatch with a boot body styles and had Honda Accord Aerodeck type pop up lights - not pretty. Bob Simon
There were about 12 Xrti 's sold in North America and mercifully most if not all have long gone to the Crusher :-) 41,378 units sold in the USA between '85 and '89. They actually had quite a following since they were lightweight and sported a 175HP motor... A few can be found at the breakers, but most parts are gobbled up quickly to support the running examples. -Bob 95 HPC VX

Graham Perry
The new 2004 Ford Mustang has a live axle. Good to see our American cousins keeping up with the times 😳 😬 It might be a bit big for your needs though !
Chelspeed
> The RS2000 had independent rear suspension Beg to differ. THE RS2000 was a mkII escort with an english axle. Then the marketing parasites at Fraud motor co committed the heinous crime of using a very similar name on a variant of the nasty nasty mkV FWD escort to exploit the misplaced brand loyalty of the RS owners. This car might have been an RS2000 but was most definetely not THE RS2000. Guess which one I used to have?
Bob Simon
The new 2004 Ford Mustang has a live axle. Sheesh...this "retro" thing has gotten quite out of hand over here 😳 It seems we have to make stuff look like something out of the past to get it to sell in the USA. Now we're applying old technology to authenticate the sale? I'm waiting for art deco to make a comeback so I can feel comfortable buying a new toaster oven.(wood burning, of course) 😬 And to think, I drive a Caterham Seven... -Bob 95 HPC VX
