Garf
I know that all sorts of rattle have been posted in the past and I have searched them all - but in the end I thought that if I could be as specific as possible in my posting of what happens then I'm more likely to get better advice! Car is 1995 1.4K SS - vehicle idles fine (slight tappet knocking but service/MOT due in April so I'll get fresh oil then - not sure what was in it but last gave it some needed top-up with 0W-40W). When accelerating the car now emits a "metallic" rattling noise - not apparent at idle so difficult to be any more precise in location than that. From my driving position it seems to be nearside towards front of engine. ☹️ Last night I determined that there is NO rattle when the car is "coasting" and this is true for any gear and revs. As soon as I put in a bit of acceleration (regardless of how much I push the accelerator pedal in) the rattle starts. The frequency and loudness of the rattle does increase with engine revs but is not proportional (actually increases slower than the revs themselves) *confused* Any one got any ideas ?? I'm a bit of a novice at all this so the more specific you can be about bits to push and prod the better 😬 Thanks. prs
Check the plug cover in the middle of the cam cover is properly srewed down. Another annoying rattle could be the two horns touching each other. Phil S7SVN

F355GTS
Leaking exhaust manifold, plug cover as suggested, check for loose front crank pulley, exhaust requires repacking? Mark
Manxseven
Go with Adam on this, sounds like Pinking. I'd get it serviced now. Simon Emmens Caterham and Pussy Photos here 😬
Steve Cragg
Check the plugs as well. A loose plug sounds like serious mechanical problems and can fool the most expert of experts. Steve Superlight #
Garf
Wow some quick responses as ever !! Just to clear up some extra points - there is no extra cam cover over the plugs so no noises from that department and I also checked that the HT leads weren't near the timing sensor lead as per Angus's issue. However I would have to say that my HT leads bought from Hafords last Autumn do not sit down on the plugs particularly well and one in particular does "pop" out occasionally over extreme bumps - but the noise the engine makes after that (and the poor acceleration) is much more obvious. I can confirm that there is a bit a air blowing from the exhaust as it was off just before Christmas at the point of the 4 into 4 - not yet properly re-sealed it - can leaking air cause that much bad ignition ?! With regards to "pinking" - the car is a K series so how could it generate some pre-ignition when it's all managed by the MEMS ?? Would it be advisable to reset the MEMS and see if it rights itself on its timing ? Any more help warmly appreciated 😬 Neil Wilson Garfield - M100 EOW - Yellow/Green 1.4K SS
Ade Ray
I know this sounds a bit off track compared to everyone else but have you checked that your engine mounts are OK? I only say this as the metallic rattle I suddenly developed on my car was cos my left-hand engine mount had cracked and had dropped my exhaust close to the bottom of the hole. This meant that when I applied revs, the exhaust would bounce of the aluminium skin and rattle. Again, this was only when revs were applied and not when idle or coasting! Irrelevant
Find a hill, drive up it in too high a gear, floor the throttle - does that make it 'rattle' ? If it does, it's pinking which is very bad for the engine and you really must get it looked at by someone who knows what they're doing. J351 TPE - Battered Old Chassis and some bits! Dickie Normuss
I had exactly those symptoms and it turned out that one of the exhaust primaries had worked loose, 2 mins with an allen key and job done Seek forgiveness, not permission.
CHRIS TODD
First thought like others is pinking, however worth also checking the brackets on the exhaust heat shield. SILVER JUBILEE SE7EN 008 - the GOLD car they never built!
paul w
I had a similar noise and it was a loose bolt at the bottom of the alternator mounting! It would increase with revs and sounded very expensive. I suppose the lesson is to spend some time making sure everything is as tight as it should be, no loose shields etc... Things are always going to work their way loose in a car like a 7. I hope it is something simple and cheap!
Richard_E
Had the same problemas Ade, only happen when you rev so looks OK when you check it at standstill.
