i have a 1988 x flow 1760 with twin 40s, the air filters are rubbing on the bonnet cut out causing a bit of damage on the bottom, am i right in thinking that the o/s front engine mount has collapsed, does any one know the part number and availability of the engine mounts for this 7

Bob, if you can support the engine (engine hoist preferably or jack under the sump with large piece of wood to spread the load) remove the mount and inspect it. If it has started to deform, or has broken, it should be possible to have it welded up locally, possibly braced where it has 'gone'.

On refiting it is permissable to insert a few washers between the steel mount and the mounting rubber on the chassis to get the air filters lined up in the bonnet aperture.

Common problem. Inspect the chassis mounts first as per previous messages. However, it is often necessary to shim the engine mount to align the carbs through the bonnet holes. Put a jack under the sump to take the weight of the engine. Remove the 3/4 inch mounting bolt into the rubber chassis mounting on the carb side of the engine. Lift the engine until the carbs are aligned in the aperture. Insert washers as shims between the engine mounting and the chassis mounting and reinstall the bolt. If you use several wahsers, check the bolt has enough thread in the chassis mount. If not - get a longer bolt and cut to fit. You can also cut a piece of small diameter clear plastic fuel pipe along its length and insert it along the bottom edge of the bonnet aperture to act as a soft edge to stop filter chafing when the engine rocks. It barely shows.

Seems the engine mounts bear a striking resemblance to Jaguar ones (the "old Style" Jags at least) these were notorious for squeezing down, and for transmitting lotsa vibration and noise (and tearing out in sudden arrivals)

Any higher quality item would certainly be of universal benefit if someone knows of one that could be shoehorned in.
