Dan sigma 140
Hi all, Ive just come back to my car and it won't start! My voltmeter is showing 12.5 and when I try to start the dash hand brake light comes on and it makes the usual whirring noise. There is a click when pressing the starter, but other than that nothing! I'm outside a Halfords, but I would be surprised if they could do anything. Any ideas would be greatly received
Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 22, 2022 Member Share Posted September 22, 2022 Any recent work done on it? Has it been drowned recently? That's 12.5 V across the battery at rest? What does it drop to as you try to start? Is that the ignition warning light? Does it come on as usual when you turn the key?Reset inertia switch.Cycle immobiliser.Inspect and wiggle the relevant cables including battery and starter and earths including the engine block.Check ECU fuse.Jonathan
Dan sigma 140
It had a new banner battery, but that was back in March. I've had no battery issues (always remove the isolator key) and the car felt absolutely fine earlier. It also feels fine when you put the ignition on, it just doesn't do anything when you press the starter, the volts don't change either.I've tried fiddling with the wiring, but I think everything is in place. colindavies56
Put car in gear, handbrake off and rock the car left to right, incase starter motor stuck and this might free it.

Dan sigma 140
I've just tried that and nothing. I think the battery is ok, everything seems normal until you actually press the starter!
Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 22, 2022 Member Share Posted September 22, 2022 Click but no drop in volts... so the starter solenoid isn't throwing.Check the starter relay. If you're not sure which it is (and there are ≥ 3 layouts on Sigmas) can you add a photo. (Being outside Halfords could be about to become relevant... )Jonathan

Dan sigma 140
Nothing dims, nothing changes. The volts are dropping over time a bit, but I think that's because I keep trying to start it.
colindavies56
The lights should dim ,swap the relays around, them 6 are the same.

colindavies56
Is the line in the fuse broken, if so swap with a good one, otherwise there ok. All blue need to be good.
Dan sigma 140
I've just checked every fuse (well I have got 4 hrs 30 mins to kill until the RAC arrive!), they all seem to be ok.

Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 22, 2022 Member Share Posted September 22, 2022 Note which relay kills what function when removed. And when the click goes away.Inspect pins and underside of relay and relay base for damage or having been cooked.Swap with another of the same type to test. colindavies56
Before you re fit the relay, can you see the spade ends its pushing onto, just incase a wire has fell off the back of it.

Dan sigma 140
I can't see any issues with the 1st 3, but I'm still struggling to remove and check the last 3!
Dan sigma 140
Well I eventually removed all of them, I couldn't see any issues with them to be honest. Halfords have just tried to give it a jump, but nothing.
SamC
When you say usual whirring, is that the fuel pump behind you priming for a couple of seconds then cutting out?If that is happening I believe that means the immobiliser is probably disarming correctly?
