Diagnostics

Hi All,

Some advice please as I know nothing about what diagnostic tools are available and to what level they can assist. I believe the cooling fan on a sigma engine is controlled by the ECU (an output from it) which in turn, switches on a relay.....etc..etc (waiting for a wiring diagram to confirm all this). Will a diagnostics tool allow me to see if the ECU is switching on the fan? And if so does anyone have any suggestions of a reasonably priced unit that would help with this and other types of faults. I'd also like to cross check the gauge in the car with the actual value the car is seeing as the general feeling i get is the gauge is an indicator it should not be relied on as a value.

Thanks in advance.

The ecu doesn't support ordinary diagnostic tools. You need to get an mbe can link and the easimap program on a laptop, or find someone who has it as the link is expensive for a one off job, and see what the readings are when the fan comes on. This is for a uk cable throttle car.

Eu cars, and I think the 1600 on the jenvey throttle body carb replicas, are on a different system that does support diagnostic tools.

I have a multimeter and yes please to the diagrams.... Just got to work out how I message you directly..... Not very intuitive this forum!

Thanks Richard

Edit....

For some reason your name doesn't have a "message author" button next to it unlike other people's

Hi Richard, looking back at your original question are you experiencing a problem with the fan working intermittently? I totally agree with the comments about using easimap etc but if the problem is an inoperative fan do have a good look at the connector to it. We have seen several with corrosion which has caused overheating issues. Best wishes Colin Jupp @ PGM

Hi Colin, not sure the fan is working at all. History is I have a slight leak coming from the top of the rad so I ran the car on the drive to see if it was obvious where it was leaking from (it wasn't obvious) but fan never kicked in at all. I can't say that I have ever heard it run or seen it run for that matter. The car has been on the road since March 21 so it not that old hence my interest in establishing that the ECU is in trying to switch it on. If it is and I can test this with a multimeter it might be some thing as simple as a loose connection on the relay connectors, I believe this is relatively common. But it would be nice to know when the fan is being asked to run otherwise I might chase this round in circles.

Thanks for the advice and the heads up I'll certainly check the connectors.

Hi Richard, the age old problem of a leaking radiator seems to be very common. Quite often the weep is very slight but also very annoying. I would be surprised if their is corrosion present on such a new car though. Think you are on the right track trying to establish exactly what is occurring. If you can access someone with easimap and a download lead it will be so much easier though. Depending on the area that you live I would have thought that there would be a club member able to assist with that?

Hope it all works out for you though, kind regards Colin
