A7 OOH Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 Faffing around under the bonnet I disturbed the ignition coil connections. Can someone help and confirm the coil connections for the +ve and -ve terminals and respective colours and number of cablesI have tried looking at the wiring diagram but my eyes must be past it.Maybe someone could photograph there coil connections.I did managed to get the car started ( after playing around with the cables), the tacho works and the ignition warning light goes out- just concerned I may be cross wired on the coil - ie the two white and black ignition feeds are connected to the neg terminal?????should this not be +ve.Current coil connections I have +ve 3 white cables ,-ve 2 white and black and 1 white if that helpsAlso how does one gain access to the Distributor-I can hardly see it under the cards yet access to check out.Do the Carbs have to come off or can it be accessed from underneath ThanksGordon
john g Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 You can remove the dizzy cap without removing the carbs.
AnkerB-S Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 The best approach is to unbolt the intake manifold from the head. That way you don't have to mess with the almost impossible to work nuts that connect the carbs to the manifold. All you need at socket wrench extensions. If you have the hose to the heater coming out in the middle of the manifold you need to reduce the coolant level. It also helps to replace the standard nut with a long one (I can't remember what they are called).
A7 OOH Posted September 28, 2020 Author Posted September 28, 2020 Thanks John- unfortunately I cant relate with your cable colours and what feeds are connected to the +VE and -VE terminalsand Anker my thoughts the same-take off the manifold.
orangepeel61 Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 According to my wiring diagram (Oct 90) the white wire is the ignition feed. The white and black wires go to the tacho and the distributor pickup (points in my case)The diagram doesn't indicate which is +ve and -ve on the coil but I would say white should go to +ve as you have it.As for your distributor, when setting the points I take the distributor out. You need a timing strobe to reset the timing afterwards, also turn the engine over (manually) to TDC and ensure the rotor arm is pointing to number 1 ignition lead first. Dont move the engine with the distributor out and just put it back in the same orientation that it came out.
OldAndrewE Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 What year is this and is it a standard Caterham loom? If I am reading the original post correctly it looks like you have a white wire to both terminals of the coil - this does not look right as usually white is live 12v when ignition on. The wiring diagrams I have looked at only show 2 wires to each coil terminal, not 3.
A7 OOH Posted September 29, 2020 Author Posted September 29, 2020 Thanks Orangepeel 61 it is as you describe only I have few white cables. The +ve terminal three white wires (two crimped as one plus an additional white. The -ve terminal has two white and black crimped as one plus a white cable- there is also a white cable near the coil not connected?Andrew the car is a 1994 Classic SE the wires are as above.Correct the white to the + ve is liveCar runs fine with tacho and ignition warning light going off.
