anthony1956
Why don't we do the hole in the bonnet anymore for all that yummy "cool" air instead of spending stacks on air boxes and tubes etc? I have long wondered and blow me,, someone on here just did the hole cutting thing. (Sorry forgot you) anthony
CageyH
Induction noise would be my guess.
anthony1956
I like induction noise
7 wonders of the world
Depends what your engine requires...... mine simply wouldn't fit under the bonnet with the inlet length required.95% of my filter is external
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted October 12, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted October 12, 2019 Same....an airbox with inlet tube would not work for my R400D RBTB. Big hole in bonnet, fat filter, lots of induction noise.Just depends on the application for the particular model. On my last car a 1.6K Supersport with Jenveys I managed a GRP plenum box with intake tube & filter on the offside. John Vine
can we see some pics? This is mine (with RBTBs). I suspect Geoff B's is much the same.JV
anthony1956
That's what I want. I worry about how to get the hole correct and what happens in inclement weather
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted October 16, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted October 16, 2019 You could purchase a new bonnet? Mine is an R500D bonnet - label on inside still attached. Cut the hole out using a template then use edge trim? There must be a suitable template available in Blat Chat land. As to inclement weather the Pipercross filter is synthetic & resists moisture ingress. Rain through the cut out is very limited. It lets in more road dirt & flies than anything else! John Vine
Mine was cut by CC when they fitted RBs. The bonnet was new as the car was in for some chassis/body repair work (which needed a new bonnet).JV

anthony1956
Good point, CC may be able to cut a new bonnet to suit as they have all the specs.
SM25T
CC retaining details of stuff on a car from 2000 !! When my car was only 5 years old, they couldn't tell me what the sump plug thread was.
Wrightpayne
Arch might be a better port of call...I’m sure the ‘official’ bonnets with cut outs (eg crossflows) have a nice rolled edge which gives a bit of extra rigidity.Ones cut to fit a particular install just have a plain edge. Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted October 17, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted October 17, 2019 Yes the factory bonnets have a rolled edge to the aperture. In my opinion the standard 'universal' aperture is too large for the Pipercross filter but for expediency it was created to accommodate the optional R500D CF intake box. I am sure that careful cutting with a Dremel disc would produce a reasonably good finish if you have a VERY steady hand......
anthony1956
no steady hand here..
anthony1956
Just spoken with Arch, no problem (of course).Raised an interesting point of interest, that there won't be any airfilter poking out of the hole, as it already is less high than those that do, defined by the fact the bonnet fits over it. SM25T
So you could have a hole with a black mesh bonded on from behind.

SM25T
Thus positioning and size of hole not quite so critical. Would of course allow more sound to escape into that controlled and certified mountain air !

SM25T
It will indeed ingress !! It wouldn't be a hole otherwise !

SM25T
We could cut a hole .... very carefully. If we are really careful, we could use the piece we cut out, to fit back into the hole to stop the rain getting in !!
