thompster
Thanks to GJT I have a set of standard front / rear springs to fit in place of my 2.25" race springs.Rear springs are 2.25" diameter and will go straight on but new fronts are only 1.9" and my upper spring retainers at the damper eyes are too big for the 1.9" springs to seat. Caterhamparts lists a 2.25" retainer but not a 1.9" one. Any ideas if its possible to get the standard 1.9 ones anywhere or do I need to find some 2.25 front springs? Wrightpayne
Or perhaps talk to Bilstein in Leicester - I was in their very hygienic build facility recently! Hopefully a generic part rather than a ‘restricted’ caterham specific part!!Are you using adjustable platforms? If yes did you spot the collars are different and will need switching around for the smaller spring?Might also be worth checking the top washer diameter as maybe different for the 2.25 - mine is 42mm and on 1.9sIan
elie boone
I guess you need Bilstein parts, with that particular part i can't help. I do have Spax top collars in 1.9"
Tom_Arundel
If you are stuck I (or someone else) could turn (machine) them down for you. Where are you?
Jonathan H
I have a pair of the top collars you can have if you still need them? You will also need the retaining washers.
thompster
Thanks all.. good advice to call Bilstein: What nice people - they're sending me a couple of the spring retainers FOC. Slightly worried about the washers because if they are different I'll need to remove the damper eye to change them. Could do without that.. Wrightpayne
Easy peasey - just use some loctite on re-assembly (I’ve just done 4!!).Great result BTW and well done Bilstein. I’ve just had 4 shocks rebuilt and very impressed with them.Ian
thompster
Just for completeness Bilstein sent me the spring retainers (top company) and they fit with the same washers. Photo below, for the record both sizes use a 42mm washer: thanks all. James.
Sandy
Hi James, I am doing this the other way aroundDo you still need your 2.25" retainers? Or do you have the No / contact you spoke to at Bilstein please?Cheers, Sandy
Wrightpayne
Sandy,FYI the adjustable platforms have one side for 1.9 springs and other side is for 2.25, basically a machined collar to help locate the springs. Only reason I know is that I reassembled mine the wrong way around and the 1.9 spring wouldnt go on! Ian
