New manual concerns

I’ve just been reviewing the new manual vs old and there are lots of differences in torques with some pretty significant. 

For example, rear spring damper bottom is 54 in the old manual but 81 in the new. 

Have there been any corrections or confirmations on the torque settings in the new manual?

And either I’m not very good at using the search function on this forum or there hasn’t yet been a review of the new manual.

One value in metric and the other in imperial ?

No. Both Nm. Lots are exactly the same. 

Could a difference be due to the different applications of copper grease?  Seems like a big variance on this particular example though.

Is this the new pictorial style with the chatty balloons? There has been a bit of discussion of that, mostly around the beta version IIRC.

And either I’m not very good at using the search function on this forum or there hasn’t yet been a review of the new manual.

The best method of searching that I know is to use an external search engine with site restriction... click the second link in my signature and then enter the search terms etc.

Thanks Jonathan. Yes, that's the search method I've been using.

And yes, this is the new pictorial manual on the Caterham website marked as 2018 BETA Assembly Guide.

An example is shown below where the old manual states top and bottom rear damper bolts to be torqued to 54Nm but the new manual states 47Nm for the top and 81Nm for the bottom.

Given I've been directed to use the new manual for my build starting in just over a week I'm a little concerned.

99% sure my S3 dedion, '98 vintage, doesn't use a sleeve in the rear top shock mount. Change in torque may be due to reducing the bolt size and using a sleeve?

Also they talk about using a 19mm spanner on the 3/4 bolt.   Thats shameful in my book, although 3/4" is very close to 19mm, but at 1/2" the difference can damage the bolt/nut.

I've exchanged emails with Derek.  The first of many I expect. I'm just to go with the settings in the new build manual.

Derek (and Sean before him) will quickly become your new best friend.

He will help you with the confusing bits and send you the inevitable missing / incorrect parts as you need them.

If you are doing your build at weekends its good to spend the last bit of Sunday going over what you plan to do the next time and send any queries request for parts straight over to Derek - that way you should be good to go next time you get into the garage.
