alcal
Hello All,I've owned a Roadsport with the 140 upgrade for 2 years and throughout this time its has been losing a small amount of coolant - about a third of a pint every 500 miles. 7s&Cs pressure tested the system and pronounced it ok. There is no trace of water in the oil or oil in the water. There is no obvious leak and I am mystified!Has anyone else experienced this or got any ideas? Thanks
colindavies56
seems a lot to top up, does the gauge read normal when driving, next time you finish your blat put some newspaper under engine and bulkhead and check later for wetness or a stain. I've topped mine up twice in 7 years,150 roadsport.
Mrp
Mine did this and it was the original plastic topped radiator. Mrp
DJ.
The other thing worth checking is the water pump. Mine failed at 13000 miles. If you get under the car you can see where it drips behind the pulley.
ChrisC
Mine liked to lose through the plastic rad, and the expansion cap. Rad and cap replaced sorted it.
K7 VCT
My 2014 car only leaked when collong down along bottom weld of dad. I wasn't noticeable unless you ran a white paper towel along the joint when cold again. New dad sorted it
alcal
Thanks allI've looked in the places suggested but no sign of a leak. I should have said it has an alloy rad.My next move will probably be to get it on a ramp when it's really hot and running and have a good look around.Could it be the head gasket allowing coolant into a cylinder without contaminating the oil? johnpbransfield
Expansion cap failure on mine. Carry a spare now.
Domus
Have a look at the tee under the air filter, hard to see but the plastic ones do deform and weep.Best to replace with a barbed brass tee.
Mrp
Also found pin holes in the odd shape hose on the block just below the teeMrp
alcal
I should have mentioned that it has the brass T piece and silicone hoses which all seem good. A couple of people have suggested the expansion bottle cap as a possible culprit and I'm wondering if there is a way of telling if this is the case? It looks ok and there is no sign of streaks down the sides of the bottle although the horns underneath it are quite rusty!
Tom_Arundel
The head gaskets are generally reliable on this engine. There are two plastic water hose connections/ housings, one on the LHS of the cylinder block and one on the rear of the cylinder head (thermostat Hsg.) both have a rubber O ring seal to the aluminium face. There have been (rare) failures of the O ring groove in the plastic due to poor quality moulding (Ford part). The one at the back of the head is well out of sight. ChrisC
My cap showed no signs, I think the seal just got week. Wasn’t expensive to replace, and I would do it just because you keep having to break the seal to top up.

alcal
Hello Again,Probably a daft question. I've fitted the new cap and like the old one it doesn't tighten. It clicks and carries on clicking as I try to tighten it. Is this normal?
DJ.
Yes, it is to prevent over tightening.

Member Jonathan Kay Posted December 7, 2017 Member Share Posted December 7, 2017 Which engine? Can you find the cap on the Caterham parts site?Do we know if caps for CSRs are different? That site suggests they might be...Jonathan
ChrisC
Most of the time a google numbers off the part finds you all you need to know. For example you can just see 8h22-8101-aa on the cap on the Caterham Parts site (not for CSR). That leads to FORD : 1W138101AA FORD : 8H228101AA LAND ROVER : PCD000090 LAND ROVER : PCD500030

malcolml
Jonathan engine is 2.3 Cosworth Duratec and the expansion tank cap is the one on Caterhams website part number CRC184. I checked this with Tony in parts and this is the one for CSR200 so have ordered one to see if this will cure problem.
