K series sump removal

Any good tips for splitting the sump from the block? All the bolts are out but it won't budge I am worried about breaking something if I get over zealous. The plan was for a simple foam check/removal but it is turning into a bit of a saga.

If you are sure you've got all the bolts out, there's nothing else that holds it unless it has stuck to the gasket. If you are having to tap it with a mallet to free it i) Might be worth popping a couple of the bolts back in just a couple of threads to stop it falling to the floor when it does come free and ii) looks carefully at the gasket once you get it off. If bits of the rubber coating have stuck to the sump or block they will need cleaning off and you will want a new gasket.

Hi revilla

I have got a couple of bolts in to catch it if it frees up. I think you are correct that the sump has bonded to the gasket. I only got the car in October (2000 K) the service record states the foam was changed five years ago.

Hi Gents

Thanks for all you help, Yes Mr Stupid missed a couple of the less obvious bolts. As you suggest Blue C7 16 bolts in total, once all the bolts were out it popped off easily. Planning to do the foam tomorrow.

Quite a few owners have suffered engine failures/oil pressure problems due to the foam breaking up and clogging the oil pickup.

No owners have suffered engine failure due to binning the foam and carrying out Oily's gasket mod.

Your choice, good luck *whistle*
