Don't need to disconnect the rigid brake line .. just raise the caliper a little to clear the disc and tie it to the spring.

Thanks SM, I’ll go that way first and see how much work is needed. If I end up taking both shafts and the diff out I’ll likely remove everything and put back with flexi hoses.

First, N/S shaft, c/w disc etc is out. 

The spring movement feels fine and the noise is there when I rotate remaining shaft so obviously not N/S shaft!

Other shaft out now. Nothing to see there, spring action similar to other, nice and smooth, so it look like something in diff.

BTW, this morning I tried to check preload. Blocked one wheel and tried other and it wouldn't move easily. Got my wrench on free wheel and then it just gave way and rotated easily afterward. 

Freed off other wheel and when I rotated one wheel the other went the same way. Then I stopped and rotated the other way and the other wheel then went the opposite way to the one I was turning! Back the original way and it continued to go the opposite way to the wheel being turned.
