Tazio
Just been out for my first drive after replacing a K series with a VX, first impressions are it's loud, and fast lol, it is overcooled though as the oil never gets up to temp even after 30 miles, a bit of blanking tape will sort that I do have one real problem though, the tacho severely under reads..I connected the tacho output from the DTA ECU to the black and white lead on the tacho which was originally from pin 55 of the K series ECU.So what have done wrong???, any ideas
Adrian Williams
Is the Vx wasted spark or is the DTA set to wasted spark when it's not?
Tazio
I am running wasted spark, and presume the ecu was set up that way though I have no way of checking.
Molecular--Bob
Dta can be set to give 1, 2 or 4 pulses per revolution. Which ecu is it? Do you have a copy of the map? I may be able to open it and have a look. What age and type is your rev counter? this may need adjustment as well.
k.russell
Good to here you are out and about alan, we all want pics. Please
Tazio
Kev, if the weather is kind I may come over in it next week. The ecu is a DTA S 40 Pro, and I haven't a copy of the map. The tacho is the standard Caterham one as fitted to Academy cars in 2002.I wanted to confirm that electrically I had connected it correctly. If it's a config/set up issue its not a problem to take it to the engine builder.
Molecular--Bob
Does that age of tach have the dip-switches on the back? It may be as simple as altering those, but not sure as mine was an old VDO. I guess you need to set the dta pulse count to match what the original k was doing.
ECR
Well done Alan !You can pop over and see me later if you want
CharlesElliott
In 2002, the Academy car would have been EU2, so not wasted spark.
revilla
Alan,Really pleased to hear you're pretty much there and it's on the road :)Andrew.
Tazio
Thanks Andrew. The tacho is a Caerbont EET3-1A32-18B, and there is a little switch block, both switches are set to 'off'.Any idea what these do?
Molecular--Bob
Beyond my pay grade I'm afraid but the archives may have what you need.
Tazio
I've emailed Caerbont, so hopefully they maybe able to clarify. Daft thing is I've only just realised the tacho only goes to 8000....which is somewhat less than the engine is capable of....oops!
Mavic82
Buy a nice new racetec one. Has built shift lights :-)

CharlesElliott
Just start changing them and see what happens?
Paul Deslandes
I take it you've found this. Can you estimate how far out it is, e.g. 50%, 2/3 etc.
Tazio
Paul, ,Thanks, yes I did find it, at a guess it's 50% of what I expect, shows 2k revs at 80 lol.
Paul Deslandes
In which case I'd switch both 1 & 2 'ON' and see what happens. If they're both currently 'OFF' it might do the trick. Otherwise you may need to make a change to the DTA ecu Engine Configuration> General Settings.
Tazio
Paul,It's worth a fiddle, if the weather is kind tomorrow I'll give it a go.
Tazio
Had a fiddle, whatever I set the switches to seems to have no impact so Will have to check the ecu config...
Paul McKenzie
Even with your bit of blanking tape, it will always take somtime to get the oil to a decent temp. I once fitted an oil cooler to mine following an upgrade in the mistaken assumption that it would need extra cooling...wrong .I find nowadays that a good thrashing on track on a hot day gets it to somewhere near
Tazio
Now sorted - it was a config issue in the DTA
Paul Deslandes
Glad to hear you managed to sort it out.As a matter of interest, what settings did you change and to what value?Paul
