Sandy
Noticed oil on the drive following my last service (Approx 100k) - Took back to garage who suggests 'they all do that sir' after about 100k due to number of times nut has been in and out Their suggestion is larger retap or helicoil but no guarantees so if neither work new sump ££££s Anyone any comments, suggestions or advice please? Is this a case of a consumable sump or could the garage be at fault?
Dr Slotter
What type of plug is it? Any chance of a fibrous washer or changing to a plug with a head to allow use of one?
Sandy
I think its the sump is threaded ☹️ No idea what the sump plug looks like but garage mentioned they always change the washer at time of service
rj
This is very common on the VAG-cars. Don't worry. A tap and a helicoil will do.
Sandy
Garage said VAG cars v common and they usually just replace sumps as they are only £80 My 123 sump allegedly is a big job to change and v expensive so hopefully a helicoil will work although they said it doesnt always

rj
VAG sump is +200 here 😳 No wonder so many Danes get their car serviced in Germany or Sweden.
Sandy
Quoting RJ: VAG sump is +200 here 😳 No wonder so many Danes get their car serviced in Germany or Sweden. Not that its relevant to me but a quick look at Eurocarparts shows 2 sumps for a 2006 golf at around the £80 mark here
6speedmanual
Hylomar Blue. degrease the plug (squirt of brake cleaner). Apply to threads. Refit. Seals even if sump threads are oily. Hylomar also has a anti shake/resistance to coming unscrewed properties. Only snag is your helpful franchised dealer will probably not use such a cheap and effective fix.
