classic1952
Hi. I am new on here, having just purchased my first Caterham, a 2009 ex Academy model. As with most cars there are light cracks near the leading edge of the front wings. I have seen several cars with carbon fibre covers extending back six inches or more, covering the front portion of the wing and at the same time hiding any existing cracks. Does anyone on here know who sells these? Thanks. Greg
Eugene
Never seem them... Are you sure they are not Carbon Wings, with the leading edge plain, and the rest painted? Just wondering...
classic1952
No, these were moulded carbon sections fitted over the existing wing and apparently bonded in place. I saw them on a few cars a Stoneleigh and one of the cars I viewed while looking to buy. Any thoughts appreciated! Greg
Roadru77er
When you say cycle wings do you mean front or rear wings? Cycle wings generally applies to the front wings. Your description sounds like you are referring to the carbon stone guards on rear wings?
classic1952
Nope, the front cycle wings, from the leading edge to about six inches back.
Nigel R300
perhaps they made them from a single carbon wing cut in to sections as i have never seen these for sale or fitted to a car.
tbird
Maybe people have used the Carbon Mods carbon skinning kit or here Tim Edited by - tbird on 30 May 2012 17:48:
classic1952
I looked at that as well, but the ones I saw were quite thick moulded sections fitted over the wing.
Grubbster
Nope, never seen anything like you describe The carbon skinning kit looks interesting - 'how to make your car heavier but look lighter' 😬
Rampmonkey
Hi Greg! One thought occurred to me....considered slapping a bit of 3M carbon effect wrap over the front of the wings? I cover my steel wing guards in the stuff and just replace it every now and then (less than annually!) It's pretty resilient stuff and cheap to replace. Shapes exactly if you arm yourself with a heat gun/ hair dryer! 😬
classic1952
That may be the answer. I feel sure that someone sells these but I have drawn a blank so far.
john milner
Could they be CSR wings?
classic1952
Thanks for the thought, but no, these were standard Academy wings with a moulded carbon cover over the fronts.
john milner
Armourfend faked to look like carbon?
dalongbloke
I think you are mistaken classic1952..... I've seen many, many sevens over the last 3.5 years, and visited all the websites and never seen or heard of any caps. I believe you have seen carbon wings with the front part unpainted. classic1952
Andy, Thanks for your comments. I will keep an open mind until I see the first car again. Greg
DaveMorris
Been watching this thread with interest. I've never seen the items that Greg is describing though I've only seen in total a few hundred sevens (6 or 700 max I suppose). We're all being really polite - but personally I don't think these things exist. (though looking at the leading edge of my front wings I wish they did). john milner
Today's guess is the black piping that is stuck on the edges for the SVA test. This is the only picture I could find: Piping on a carbon wing. A lot easier to spot on a yellow wing.
Grubbster
😬 Thats one of my old photos, just to confuse further there is no piping on it - it is a carbon wing made by Mog and the black edge is just how they make them, no piping on them.
john milner
I thought it was odd on carbon but it may still help identify the stuff. This one may have the piping but it's hard to spot. Piping on yellow. Needs to be zoomed.
Grubbster
This is the same car with the original wing and piping http://inlinethumb28.webshots.com/50587/1090341079048831359S500x500Q85.jpg Edited by - Grubbster on 2 Jun 2012 11:05:
classic1952
Thanks chaps! The car I first saw with these fitted is currently for sale at Woodcote, having been bought by them from a private seller in North Yorkshire. It was him who told me about them. However, it may be that the owner prior to him made them from some form of pliable carbon look overlay. Whatever way it was achieved, it was a very effective way of covering up all the small cracks that appear towards the front of the wing without the cost of new wings. leon
That looks to me like the sva compliant piping, it quickly deteriorates and/or unsticks in patches, most people only keep it on for the inspection then remove it. PVC not carbon though.
