Adjust brake shoes on English axle

Recommended Posts

I've been sorting out the rear brakes on my car by replacing the brake shoes, which on my English axled car uses the 9" drum.

What I cannot work out is where to adjust the shoes inwards so that I can fit the drum back on, and if I need to re-adjust the handbrake mechansim inside the drum?

If it's form a M1 Escort then it will have mechanical snail cam adjusters, Mk2 had auto adjusters follwer the handbrake linkage thro and you will find (memory test here now - it's been a while since I was under a Mk2) two knurled surfaces which are spung loaded together and the handbrake linkage moves them apart until resistance is felt - shoe on drum this sets the limit and the knurled surfaces then sit in a datum position.

Take the drum off and move the linkage and you see how it works.

You can get a better pedal by clicking these up 'manually' with a suitable fine screwdriver and slippping the drum on, you may have to grind the wear lip off the drum to get a clear fit too.
