Doug
Do they harden with age and if so over what sort of period. The reason I ask is that I've just bought some wheels with AO21Rs and they seem harder than the 21s on my other set of wheels (which are less than 12 months old). It could also be that they are a harder compound. 'Have you any idea what it's like to have the wind rushing through your hair!' Dickie Normuss
I think all tyres harden with age, the markings on the tyre wall should give you the time they were made. Don't know how long they take. Drumster
AFAIK 21s only come in one compound Chris Alston C7CAT 1800 Supersprint R248 ....and then I jumped in
Graham Sewell
Allegedly, tyres should be thrown after 6 years.... So most peoples spare wheel is useless. The date code on the side is the week number and year of manufacture. So it should be easy to work out. But if you are lazy, Car Bibles has a calculator (in red) ust before the description of the E mark.... Cheers, Graham ------ Low tech luddite - xflow and proud! MusCat
Given my experience that 60 profile A021Rs only last 4,000 miles (the 70's fair a little better) how does anyone keep them for 6 years? 😬

alextangent
My A021R 70 profiles road use only will probably get up to 8K or nearly 2 seasons before needing replaced. I'm fairly light on tyres in the tintop, so I suspect 4K or less might be achievable if you really try to strip the tread off them Alex McDonald Loud, louder, loudest... Doug
I've always used 60 profile AO21s. So, are 70 profile actually more suitable on 13" rims? Ged
I went from 60 profile on 14" rims to 70 profile on 13's and for road use prefer the 70's. How much is to do with the reduction in rim size, I don't know. They're considerably cheaper too. 😬
irrotational
Doug - my main argument for 70 profile was the cost - they are 50% of the 60 profile... just a shame they dont fit under my front cycle wings... --- my mind is blank....
S47zz
I'm heavy on my tyres:- Front 185/70x13s ao21's last 4500miles Same tyres on the rear 7-800miles 😳 Great road tyres especially in the wet
Graham Sewell
MusCat, They may onbly last 8000 miles, but I only managed 300 miles last year because of poor weather and various work/family commitments taking up my weekends. Normans_Ghost
The MG Midget I bought HM had 22 year old Michelin MX tyres that were as new. They were terrifying! Like driving on very hard, shiny plastic wheels. New tyres have transformed the car. McBreadhead
Sadly mine have lasted 8,000 miles which means I haven't been driving hard enough! Just replacing the rears now.
Doug
So, the consensus is either slicks or CR500s. Where is the best place to get decent second hand slicks? Are there still quality issues with CR500s - splitting sidewalls etc? 'Have you any idea what it's like to have the wind rushing through your hair!'
