The Pikey
Looking in the tunnel from underneith I can see that one of the three U.J's on the props (it's a BEC) has got grease coming out and its sprayed on either side of the tunnel. Is this a problem? Jason Currently, I am qualified to plead ignorance.
juleslid
Jason, am no expert but when I built mine last winter I squeezed some grease into the UJ's and plenty of it seems to have escaped since. I'm happy in the knowledge that at least one bit of my car is properly protected from corrosion! Jules
Stationary M25 Traveller
Some will always escape when you grease the UJs - this will get sprayed outwards as the propshaft spins.
The Pikey
It's strange how the other two are managing to keep the grease inside. I guess I am assuming the other two actually have grease in them though One thing I did notice though was the one which is leaking does not have a nipple cover on. Stationary M25 Traveller
If you mean no cover over grease nipple - that may suggest there is no ball and spring inside the nipple, thus the grease will escape ? If you mean no grease nipple, then you also need to put something in the threaded hole to stop the grease escaping.
The Pikey
theres a nipple but the grease is coming out of it. I'll call Bailey Morris Monday and see what they say. jason Currently, I am qualified to plead ignorance.
Stationary M25 Traveller
Take the GN off and see if you can blow through it the wrong way ? If so, just replace it - only cost pennies !
WD
Never having greased the prop shaft in 6years could someone advise what type of grease is best
Stationary M25 Traveller
Just your average Castrol LM, or anything you would put in your wheel bearings ....... you mean you haven't greased them either 😳 Really must grease prop-shaft regularly (more than every 6 years !!) WD
Thanks, I think I better put that on the thing to do list 😳 Long time since I've seen my grease gun .....
Stationary M25 Traveller
If it is anything like mine, you'll have to go and buy a flexible spout to be able to get on the the grease nipples of the propshaft UJs !! Couldn't get the car far enough off the ground with the rigid spout that was originally fitted.
The Pikey
After having a good look at my nipples I have decided that the grease is definatly coming out of one of them so I'm getting a new nipple this weekend and treating the UJ to nice helping of the Bailey Morris prescribed grease which is Lithium based. Stationary M25 Traveller
Hey Jason - what happened to the traffic south through Kenilworth yesterday at 0830 ? Is it always like that, or was it us reprobates struggling to get to the ES Show at Stoneleigh that caused it ? Stoneleigh to Balsall Common previous evening took less than 15 mins, in the morning it took well over an hour !!!!
DSL
All mine leak grease out, but then I have greased them 3 times in probably less than a 100 miles of use (Competition)

Stoneleigh to Balsall Common previous evening took less than 15 mins, in the morning it took well over an hour !!!! I guess there was another crash at J 5 or 6 on the M42 south again and people diverting through. Lucky for me I live on the stoneleigh so I don't see most of the kenilworth traffic in the mornings. The Pikey
DSL Can it be a bec thing with the props going a lot faster because of the diff ratios? And of course a BEC is much much faster than a CEC Currently, I am qualified to plead ignorance. Bilbo
Well I keep loosing my grease nipples since Roger breathed on the engine 😬 Even a dab of locktight will not keep them in ❗ Still I bought a new prop err a year ago but I have not found the time to fit it.... rather it was going in when I changed the diff ratio but that's been put off.
