What a sad and terrible tale. Why own a car and leave it unused for 8 years! I feel bad if I haven't used one or the other for a month.

You would want to pick it up cheaply because it will take time and cost a decent sum to restore (I hope you have the space...)

But 21s are beauiful cars - I think of the 21 as a tourer rather than a sprinter. I would take my Crossflow on track before the 21 every single time.

Bellissimmo

David did tell us (on the 21s List) how much he spent on his year long (or a bit more) rebuild. I am sure if you ask him nicely...

If you go to look at it you may want to contact Paul Jacobs, who lives just outside Taunton. He is a former 21 owner as well as a good, knowlegeable chap.

If someone want to know how much to budget to rebuilt a 21 there are two alternative, DIY or Garage.

Dave P will be along shortly I assume, meanwhile if any interested party want to drop me a mail on how much I have been quoted to stripped mine back to chassis component by a well known Lotus/Caterham specialist, and rebuilt it, please drop me a mail.

*arrowup*Don't be shy Jack and give us some ball park figures on here....no need to mention names! What is so difficult about the 21. How is the (GRP) body attached? Is that the problem? I thought that these cars were more or less Sevens under the skin.

Brunel

Theyare in many ways but also different in many ways. It is a noticably bigger car (wider, longer and the dorrs are bulky). Dismatling this example will be difficult because everytihng will be seized up. Talk to 6 speed manual (Peter), who helped me move my doors, difficult access and seized solid.

I know the car and have spoken at length with the owner.

I think it probably needs a body off job to access the chassis for a blast and re-powdercoat by bruce.

it's quite a job - it took 3 of us 3.5 days to strip my 21 down to the bare nuts and bolts. it very likely that you will cause minor damage to the body doing it as well, so would need to budget for some grp repair and a bit of paint. Putting it back together again is FAR longer.

My rebuild also involved re-engineering a few things, upgrading the engine to a vvc-r and fitting dry sump/lightweight flywheel etc. Also a complete interior re-trim/hood repair as well as new exhaust design to release the extra horsepower. Also had the complete wiring loom replaced and updated to EU3 and proper road car spec (unlike all your 7's which aren't properly fused and protected). If it's been wet for that long, might need the loom looking at too.

You don't have to take the car as far apart as i did - it can come to pieces with the doors/boot/screen/sidescreens in-situ, but would be hard to lift/move if you left all the superstructure on.

If anyone wants a sensible view of how much that car is worth and would be worth after a rebuild, then please let me know.

I would suspect that the engine might want a little bit of a refresh and to be fair to you 7'ers - i'd put something with a little more oomph in there if you're used to a 7.

p.s. my final bill was circa 8900 pounds. Of which 3500 was insurance company money repairing the damage to the rear of my car caused by someone hitting it and scarpering without leaving any details. (£3500 was a complete strip, repair grp and repaint of the car to a VERY high standard).

p.s. there's NO labour for the assembly/disassembly in that - parts and specialist repairs were the only costs.

based on the sale prices of "good" ones recently, you would have a good return on a sympathetically done rebuild - certainly mine would be valued a 17-19k should it be sold now.

In the last 2 years, all the cars have changed hands for 12.5 to 17k depending on spec and condition. Mileage is fairly unimportant.

the things that tend to affect the price are mohair hood versus leatherette one, which gearbox is fitted, adjustable platforms, big or small brakes, LSD or not, leather or cloth interior and of course the choice of engine.

typically, a supersport has a few more of the desirable options on it. Look out for whether the wing mirrors match the bodywork - it's a guide to whether it was factory or customer built (not cast iron guide, just an indication).

BTW - a chassis repair job (from experience), including new ally panels and powdercoat wouldn't leave you much change from £2500 ISTR

That's based on supplying a stripped chassis to somewhere like Arch, having new panels made and powdercoated and all your wishbones and a-frame/engine bay struts blasted and powdercoated (and re-bushed). I'd also have a rear towing eye tacked on and the diff strengthening done. Also the under-plates for the engine mount rubbers modified to cope with caterham's new style engine mounts (the middle falls out of them on 21's as there's no chassis rail under the middle of the mounting rubber). If there are any properly rotten sections (which they may not be), then might need new rails cutting in to the chassis.

Obviously, you could buy new wishbones etc from caterham if you required as they're common to the 7 standard wishbones. A-frame is bespoke 21 part.

Guide price for the work (I'm deliberately not being conservative - sure things COULD be done cheaper, but these are sensible prices):

3.5 days to strip body off/dismantle the car

£500 in nuts, bolts, fixings, cable ties, black goo, rivets, coppaslip, grease etc

£2500 chassis and panel work

Good scrub and re-stitch for the hood

Rebuild - 6 or 7 good LONG weekends with a proper team of people - there are jobs which need 3 pairs of hands.

Full set of "service" things - oil, filter, plugs, HT leads, cambelt, gearbox oil, diff oil, boots for the drive shafts, grease for propshaft, brake fluid

Contingency/Optional extras:

£1500 for grp repair/paint job contingency in case you damage it (you don't need a FULL job like mine)

£1500 for interior carpets, leather replacements etc to fully refurb interior

£1000 for new loom

£500-600 Updates to cooling system - new Radtec custom 21 rad, remote thermostat, fan override, samco hoses, big fan

£30 for one way valve for fuel tank breather

£100 for improved lights

£70 for new headlight covers (bespoke item - contact me)

Final value of car? Depends on engine and the bits mentioned in my post above, but a good quality rebuild, all road registered and ready to roll would be 14500+ to the right person I would suspect.
