Stewart Swift
I bought my first 7 Aug last year, a 1600 Road Sport DeDion 1999. Wow! should have done it years ago. The only thing I can fault it on is a noisy diff particularly when I lift off the gas. Is this normal???????
Ray Pearce
TADTS. I just tried putting 'noisy diff' into a search of tech-talk and it came back with about 30 topics with the general consensus being: They All Do That Sir!
Peter T
Have you checked the Propshaft uj's they also can clonk when lifting off the power. If they have not been greased they can begin to run dry and wear. Try getting underneath and grabbing the prop and move it to see if any plar exists first. Also make sure the diff has the correct amount of oil in also. R500 Mango Madness
shn7
I would suggest you follow Peter's advise whilst recognising that Ray is also right (TADTS = They all Do That Sir) Bear in mind that a seven has no sound proofing and you sit very close to the diff. tonysee
Stewart, I bought my first 7 in july last year, and like you have enjoyed every minute behind the wheel. my diff makes orrible noises, mostly off power, and somtimes sounds like its going to explode but as they say TADTS don't worry, ask Steve for some ear plugs, drive and enjoy 😬 after a while it kinda goes away, as you get used to the noise, also the faster you go the quieter it is but true - perhaps *thumbup* tony's bad, blue 7 here

Ozzy
When I first bought my car nearly 3 years ago now, I took it to a 7 specialist after a week, as I was extremely concerned about all the noises, and thought something was seriously wrong with it. Needless to say, my mind was put at rest "TADTS", and to be honest I don't even hear all the noises anymore, as they're so normal. Oz. Paul Formston
Hi Stewart the first seven that I ever went In was MAKs, ( Malcolm Kitteridge ) and it was brand new and first thing that I noticed being a X motor mechanic was the Diff noise, and Malcolm said that he had been told that was normal, but it was really noisy and he took it back lots of times and got the same answer, so he took it out and got it overhauled at BGH and its a lot better, apparantly the Sierra diff is very hard to set up and thats why you get noisy ones, mines OK thank god, 😬 on Malcolms the pinion bearing had been over tightened and that was the problem Regards Paul
old gimmer
My factory built car had a noisy diff.when it went back for its 500 mile service I complained about it [i think it totally spoils a great car] I was given the Tadts treatment. For the next service I took it to Clive Kenrick, He agreed with me,phoned Caterham and they consented to a new diff. being fitted under warranty. What a result ! actually the new one wasn't much better than the old one, but I don't mind so much ,pleased that Caterham at least made the effort. combine
No one's mentioned about checking the diff oil level ! Probably because you need to make your own allan key as there is virtually no room to get the blighter in the plug to undo it ! Spoke to Caterham midlands about this , cut the elbow off said allan key and hope it doen't break !

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted January 11, 2007 Leadership Team Share Posted January 11, 2007 And make a nice access panel in the boot floor before refitting it, to make the job easier next time: here here Stu.
combine
Good idea , not mentioned by caterham midlands . Is it easier than cutting the side off a key though ?
paul jacobs
Well, actually they don't all do that, only most of them. Over the years I've had about 10 Caterhams [including a 21], three of them have had LSDs', and the quietest one of the lot, is the one I've got now, The diff appears to be a second hand one, rebuilt with an LSD unit in it, by CC [Road and Race Transmissions I think] and it is as quiet as a mouse, no whining, no clunking, no snatching, it's a bloody marvel 😬. So, as per a couple of previous posts, if you can be bothered, pull it out and get it set up properly, if not, live with it, and it won't get any worse. Paul J. combine
Tried the idea of removing the boot floor to access the diff level plug , No this method doesn't work as the de dion is within 0.5 inch from the back of the plug ! So back to cutting the elbow on the key .
