  1. I changed the fuel filter on my ‘98 K series car yesterday. I made three observations…

    1) the new Bosch filter 0986 450 119 has an identical sticker on it compared to the Mann 612/2 I took off.

    2) the grommet where the fuel hose passes through the boot floor metalwork had perished and partly disappeared. I replaced with a 20mm electrical open grommet, cut so I could get it around the hose then carefully poked into place with a small well used screwdriver.

    3) the two metal fittings attached to the filter seemed to have tiny O rings.

On this last point, I dont recall reading anything on blatchat about their replacement? What is the POBC thinking on this? All went back together OK and no leaks but if they should be changed as part of a filter swap I’d like to be prepared for next time and help others do the same!

  2. Does anyone sit in the seat?

If yes it could be a very bad idea removing the headrest. In an accident it will stop whiplash and head contact with FIA bar. Even with a helmet on the bar would need some sort of approved padding.

Some people have added headrests directly to the FIA bar instead of the seat mounted one.

  3. I’m sure the build manual said to slip a bit of washer tube over it to help with rattles?!

Interestingly, my build manual shows a thicker version for the 6 speed box which is no longer to be found anywhere (I posted about this a few years ago). Anyway, the 6sp works fine with the above style pivot.

  4. I agree with Simon, relieve the mount.

On my 98 car the engine earth bolts to the chassis using one of the mount bolts. It is recommended to clean parts to bare metal to get a good contact. Bit of coppa slip prevents corrosion.

  5. The next place to check is the coolant rail just above the exhaust - the rear gasket can leak sometimes due to front fixing being away from the head. When its tightened it affects the mating face.

    Lots in the archives.

I have newish RainExperts on my Golf Mk4, but I would not choose them for the lightweight seven. Toyo R888Rs are a fantastic summer Caterham-friendly road tyre, and they cope well with damp and wet conditions - while also encouraging you to take care. I have 14” minilites for most of my touring type adventures, and a set of 13” for the better quality roads.

    What is the reason?

Rainexperts are poor or your preference is something grippier that is compromised in wet / persistent rain?

  7. They are often a different size and gauge of tubing and different fixings too.

On the older cars you’d also need a different boot cover. Not sure on the metric cars.

Its buy new and unfortunately the old ones don’t tend to have much value.
