  1. Mark,

machinemart do a load leveler for about £35 IIRC. I purchased one for my K when I changed the clutch - complete control of entry angle! Just bolted it to the front of the head and a long piece of chain under the gearbox.

  2. Has anyone fixed up a cycle speedo reading off a magnet on the propshaft, taking into account the diff ratio to calibrate. Does the sensor still read correctly as the magnet is passing 3 or 4 times more frequently and also at a smaller time interval due to the diameter of the prop? Does the magnet affect the balance of the prop and what adhesive is recommended?

  3. Jonathon,

there was a post on this recently - recommendation was to get a basic dehumidifier. I've just ceramic tiled the garage floor, installed a sink and TV. The other half is looking for a settee so I can move in permenantly though I would have sole access to the beer fridge!!

  4. Pete,

if you follow the bottom rad hose back to the engine the t/stat is inside the plastic bit between the j shaped hose and the engine block. One bolt to remove which also holds the dipstick tube and it just pulls out (towards rear of car). Hardest bit will be refilling it without airlocks but you already know that!.

Might be worthwhile getting a new o ring to seal against the block though it may come with the t/stat.

  5. Pelico,

How have you fixed the tank to the chassis? For the guage to work the tank will need to be earthed. If you've pop rivited the metal bracket to the chassis tube and clamped with the large jubilee clip then it should be fine - I have seen some pictures where the tank is just ty-wrapped in place.

    I'm fitting mine tomorrow!

  6. Fordy,

My '98 car was delivered at the time of the changeover and came with a short earthing wire and connector to attach to the second pin - you have connected it correctly. I suggest there is a fault somewhere. Reversing lights usually work by having the live feed going directly to the bulb then back to the switch - selecting reverse simply puts this to earth.

I would check you have live at the original switch wire (with ignition on). If not, check for live at the lamp unit and the bulb itself. If you have live at the switch wire check the switch itself or the earth.

  7. Andy,

Try Macpa Motor Factors LTD in Jarvis Street Leicester 0116 2519055 - they are Banner agents - I purchased a Banner trickle charger from them a while ago £28.

  8. Tony,

leave the plastic cap in situ, which protects the gearbox output shaft. I had to change an exploded clutch plate last winter and using a Machine Mart load leveller (approx £35) you can get the engine / box level before removing the cap and inserting the prop. This way you can fill the gearbox before installation. I didn't spill a drop!!

Also keep the cap, as the principle works when removing the engine/box.

  9. I've got most of the hoses to upgrade the cooling system on my K this winter but there are a couple I'm struggling with and wonder if hoses from other vehicles which are the correct size and bend configuration can be used. The two in question are:-

    1) Double L shape hose on heater that firstly bends downwards then forwards to the heater valve.

    2) Submarine pipe to header tank connection (could use wire supported hose?)

Samco are the preferred option but anything available in blue will be fine. Any ideas?

  10. Winter is imminent, upgrades are imminent and I need a bit of advice. Car is 98 K series supersport with Quaiffe T/B LSD, sticking with 14" minators and has standard billies / springs. Main use is on the road, probably doing some track days. Finance Director has approved some expenditure!!

    1) Wide track being ordered tomorrow but there are several choices of anti-roll bar from CC (existing one is about as thick as a pencil). Which is best size for useage described above? I will also be fitting a second hand rear ARB from a similar spec / age K but size unknown.

Do front springs need uprating as greater leverage?

    2) Apollo & Laminova set up - where is the best place(s) to get all the necessary bits and pieces?

    3) Yoko 021's or 048's?

Winter 2004 start on the engine!!

PS also posted on chitchat by mistake!!

  11. Myles,

If you do cash in the RFL, make sure you study the SORN form carefully and tick all the necessary boxes. I was nearly fined as much as the refund for not ticking a box under a heading "office use only". Several phone calls / letters eventually got the fine waived.

  12. Ask around, I use a company in Leicester that made me up a standard plate in three minutes flat no ID or anything £10 cash. I've also been told bike shops still make up 'show plates' with no id or questions!

  13. Peter,

I have a copy of the Mk1 RS Escort Haynes Manual which covers the BDA 1601 engine as fitted to the RS1600. There is no mention of renewing the cylinder head bolts - torque setting is 60-65 lb ft. Only difficult bit is it uses shims to set the valve clearences.

    The manual is isbn 0 85696 926 5, Haynes ref 139.

I bought the manual out of interest in RS escorts but never owned one, but if you have any further questions e-mail me at Wrightpaynes@aol.com.

  15. My 1998 1600K ss is still running its 185/60 14 Michelin pileups and I fancy a change. I don't want to go for 13's (ground clearance). I average 2500 road miles per year and would like my new tyres to last a couple of years.

What do you recommend - Toyo's, Yokies, Bridgestones?? 🤔

  16. This happened to me returning from Dartmouth after an accident repair (another story!!). M11, pouring rain no wipers - fun!! On return to dry garage, removed said black box and joined male/female in/out wiring plugs together. Now in spitting rain 'revert to manual' - rainex helps!!
