  1. My car is a 2002 SV U.S. spec Zetec. It has some characteristics that make me think it has a lightened flywheel. It revs up very quickly, but spools down even quicker. It idles at 1400 RPM, but will die every time at stoplights unless you really work to keep the revs up. The car has 38,000 original miles and has always behaved like this. The engine itself runs great, and I am used to it trying to die at stop signs. I am just curious because I have heard that Caterham uses a lighter flywheel than the standard Ford unit.
  2. Thanks for the help guys. I've closed the heater vent on that side. Maybe that will do it.
  3. My ignition switch has been replaced once over the years. The car is a 2002 SV and the switch is supposed to be a Rover unit but is labeled as Lucas. The new switch is several years old and still functioning but is quite warm to the touch after a run. Is this normal?

    Petrol smell persists

Thanks for the info, guys. For the time being I'm going to use the odometer method and hope the smell corrects itself
  5. The fuel sender gasket (it was shot) on my 2002 SV has been replaced and everything put back together, but the gas smell is stronger than ever and the fuel gauge will not go past the 1/2 full mark. The tank is full (10 U.S. gallons). I am perplexed.
  6. Mt 2002 SV is back together after my bout with a smelly gas tank. Thanks to the people of Blatchat for steering me in the right direction. It did turn out to be the fuel sender gasket. CC sent me one and it got to me in the States in four days. I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for all the stooping that was required, so the local Ford garage did the actual work. They had to remove the spare wheel and the roll-bar, as well as ripping out the carpet on the boot floor. They treated the car with great care and only charged me $100.00 for the whole job. The hoses were fine and if the new gasket lasts 17 years--well I can't ask for more than that.

    Zetec Conversions

Mine is a 2002 U.S. spec Zetec. It has 35,000 original miles and has been ultra reliable.

    Petrol smell

How do you remove the carpet from the boot floor? I assume you have to cut through it. I can see myself making a mess of the whole thing.

    Petrol smell

Well, I've tried to remove the boot floor without success. I found two screws and removed them, but that didn't help. The only way I can see to remove the floor would be to completely destroy it. I've tried to pry it up using different tools, but no luck. My car is a 2002 SV.

    Thanks, that's what I'll do.

    Petrol smell

I have the same problem, and it does seem strongest under the boot. I've never tried to take apart any of the boot before. Just wondering what would be involved. Would the gas tank itself have to be removed?
  12. As I recall, I used a thick board--or something similar.
  13. I did the same thing myself once, and I used a scissors jack to straighten it. No problem since.
  14. If you change from a 3.92 to a 3.62 won't that also change the speedometer reading?
  15. I tried various combinations for the switches. I was able to cut the error from reading high by 12 mph to reading high by 7 mph. I finally decided to put my own numbers on the face of the gauge. They cover up the original numbers and are also slightly bigger.
  16. My SV(Zetec) would not normally go above 45C. I switched to a warmer thermostat which helped some. The final solution was to place a piece of aluminum 1/3 of the way up the radiator. This gets the temperature up to about 80C. Now there is enough heat in the winter and I haven't had to remove the piece in the summer.
  17. My car (2002) SV, came new with two fittings only--never had a problem in all these years.
  18. I made my mudflaps out of black cycle wing pieces from redline. If you do it the right way it keeps the same shape as the wing itself. You can even make it look like it is all one piece.
  19. I know this is unusual, but I live in a cold winter climate, so I use the full hood and doors for the 5-6 month winter. I have an SV and I am 5'11'' 190 lbs. --no problems getting in or out. It stays nice and warm all winter . In the summer months I just have the top down and use wind wings. Well, this is a big club so there are bound to be a few of us who are a bit unusual.
  20. I guess I'll try to make my own with velcro and super glue. If I do it right it should work.
  21. My 2002 SV did not come equipped with snap fasteners so you can secure sidescreens. Does anyone have a picture of what they look like?

    Tires

Nice looking car--looks like you have the larger front wings like I do. Most people seem to have the smaller ones.

Thanks--I did that and it comes out 185-70-13. So that's what I'm going to try. JIM

    Tires

I have 16" inch wheels on my SV with 205-45-16 tires. I just ordered some lightweight apollo 13 inch wheels from Caterham. Just wanted to see if they make the car more nimble. My only concern is that I live on a dirt road with a clearance problem--it scrapes a bit with the wheels I have. Does anybody know what size 13 inch tires I will need to get about the same height? I was thinking 185-60-13, but maybe that won't be high enough. The total diameter of the 16 inch wheeltire combination is 22.5 inches. I do have an aluminum skid plate fitted on the bottom of the sump. The engine is a Zetec. Thanks to any one who can help.
  25. My sidescreen mirrors don't seem to vibrate. I have the smaller carbon fibre mirrors. You can't see behind you well enough with them as they are, so I glued a larger convex mirror to them and it seems to work fine.
