Fortunately I didn't hear that but I was asked by one of the organising committee about 30 minutes later why I hadn't put my "kit car" on display at the village fete. Still, I live in an area where some of the locals drive their tractors to the pub.

Driving past The Unicorn, Marden at 1.30pm. Is this the 1st 7 to be held up by a wheelbarrow race?
  3. Hi Tim. I have received confirmation that the car is a total loss. No surprise there. I'm now waiting for the settlement offer. SHMBO said why don't you get something else? There are a few cars I would like, 250GTO, 246 Dino, 911 (early model), E-type. None of them remotely affordable. I'll be looking to see what sort of 7 I can afford over the next few months. I can't face being restricted to driving a Honda for long.
  4. Nothing wrong with Q plates. The initial post suggested that it was on a Q plate and the second questioned whether it was a Caterham.
  5. Fuel leak judging by the smell just before it went up. I was going to pull over and investigate once I got to the other side of the one lane bridge but got caught by the red light. It went up seconds after I stopped. Wearing a full face helmet and proban overalls paid off for once. Fortunately I refused to put a full roll cage on the car when I still racing it having seen too many fires at race tracks in the 60's and 70s.
  6. Not a Q plate. It was a real Caterham, Andy Noble's 1989 Class C car, subsequently raced my me for about 10 years. After 20 years of marshalling the biggest fire I've had to put out is my own car. After today Tim Neill has the only Caterham in the Brands Hatch marshals carpark. Nice working with you today Tim. The car is no doubt repairable, but the cost of doing so will be prohibitive. It happened opposite a pub full of drunken Pikeys one of whom took it upon himself to walk on the bonnet. Unfortunately it did not reignite at that moment. As decking a Pikey with a fire extinguisher is no doubt classified as racially aggravated GHB the **** was able to drove himself home about 15 minutes later.

Spotted today about 12.30 in Albion Road, Marden, Kent. I was on crutches, no blatting for at least another month.
  8. F640RPG is mine. 1st spotted after 20 years (minus 3 months) ownership. Pity it rained so hard later in the day. I had to drive home with the visor up in order to see properly. Good day's racing though. Even the 3 hour race was moderately interesting.
  9. You're right about the weather. Sitting outside a pub in February is unusual. Unfortunately the 7 was undergoing treatment for chronic misfire so travelling in Honda.
  10. One orange, one blue near Hamstreet, travelling west.
  11. Just east of Sandhurst about 2.45 this afternoon. You wouldn't have noticed me, passenger in a Honda.
  12. I dread the thought of it going to far east. Having watched Auto Union startup procedures at FOS a few years ago I doubt anyone but C&G could be trusted to run it. An annual outing at Goodwood should be a condition of sale.
  13. Had a fuel pump problem in August but it's running fine now. Hasn't been out much recently. Its regular run is to Brands Hatch so don't go through Staplehurst very often.
  14. That means there's at least two 7's in Staplehurst. Mine is an 89 vintage x-flow. Yellow with green wings, aeroscreen & roundels. The latter sadly have been purely decorative in recent years.
  15. Steven - I live in Marden. Is the 7 garaged in Headcorn Road yours?
  16. Waved to you from window of Polo as you turned into Pattenden Lane. Are you local?
  17. I have decided on engine rebuild & will investigate using sealed system. Thanks to all for your advice.
  18. Fan is in traditional position behind radiator & is operating correctly. Sender was OK until last weekend but now reads max as soon as I switch on electrics. Since problems started I've been in the habit of topping up coolant before driving anywhere. System has been drained & tested so many times I can't believe the problem is an airlock.
  19. Fan operating in wrong direction - hadn't thought of that. It might explain the recent experiences. Will check this weekend, I assume it should rotate in clockwise direction? Head gasket was replaced & head skimmed in June.Timing etc put right in July. Car has done approx 60 miles since. My gut feeling is that it is an engine rather than cooling system problem. With previous x/flow (admittedly lower spec) I could do 500 miles in a day, including a 100 mile race, without ever exceeding 90 degrees.
  20. Thanks for the advice. Water pump working fine, at least while car is stationary. Ran the car without thermostat for a few months when problems started. Took hours to reach 80 degrees, didn't stop overheating. Redline have checked the cooling system a few times & can't find anything wrong. Excuse my ignorance, by combustion gasses are you suggesting petrol & coolant are mixing? What would this mean? A friend swears the problem is a cracked block. Mind you he knows nothing about x/flows.
  21. Radiator is 4 years old. Drained system (the remaining 1 litre) & flushed rad last night, no blockage. I'm reluctant to pay for rebuild at present - throwing good money after bad? Beginning to think that replacement with Zetec might be more sensible.
  22. My x/flow (1700, 254 cam)has suffered overheating problems for more than 2 years. Until a few months ago water temp stayed below 100 unless in heavy traffic or below about 45mph. Now temp drifts up to about 110 within 10 miles & stays there. Last time out (Saturday evening) temp off end of scale, oil pressure dropped to approx 0. Cooling system has been tested numerous times & works perfectly in workshop. Most cooling system components have been replaced in last 2 years, override switch fitted .... Only cooling system mod not yet tried is ali rad. Head gasket was replaced in June. Any ideas?
