    620R cooling

Finally managed to find some time to run my converted car today and log some temperatures . Red is coolant temperature , blue is engine revs . Ignore the scale numbers , that relates to data ive removed from the graph . The total run time covered by the graph is 49 minutes . The car took 5 mins from cold to reach its working water temperature in the mid 80s and over the course of the test it never fluctuated out of the 80-93 degree range ( as recorded by the engine ecu - still waiting for my dash gauge to be returned by Cairbont ) .The first and last sections of the test were on pretty busy suburban type roads and the engine was reaching fan kick in temp at 92 degrees a few times when stationary . The blue peaks represent three motorway slip roads and high revs to the limiter range followed by a run at " national speed limit " You can see the coolant temp immediately drop given the increase in revs , open thermostat and cold air flow but that was quickly arrested as the thermostat closed .No extreme drops into the 60s as some unmodified cars seem to exhibit . I was a bit worried that keeping the temperatures higher would generate another problem such as the fan staying on for long periods but that doesnt seem to be the case .It kicks in at 92 and ,in todays 17-19 degrees ambient it was off again at 90 in less than a min . Pretty pleased with these results . Next step is to try it on a much colder day and see how it performs .

So ive now converted my car , did a "drive way test" to fully bleed the air out ( and check for leaks ! ) and logged the results . Going to road test it tomorrow if time and weather allows . Mark ( Ctr Mint ) Can you do me a favour please , plug your 420 into Easymap and see what temperature the rad fan switch on and switch off are set at ? TIA
  4. i used clear protective film here , does pretty much the same job
  5. Selling my father in laws Honda Jazz as hes sadly past using it , its only done 2000 miles in the last three years ! only 30,314 miles from new Jazz 1.4SE petrol , manual gearbox Storm metallic silver with grey/blue interior . 620R cooling

One update on prices , I said in post #238 that the plenum gasket was £20 , it's actually £80 as it's a thermal insulating gasket although you might be able to reuse and I have found a manufacturer who will sell direct for circa £50 .
  7. I told him not to use those 10 inch wheels !

    620R cooling

Just to update on testing . We ran Igor's car on track at Anglesey today , was pretty hot in the morning and rainy / colder in the afternoon . The car replicated the road testing and ran in a similar temperature window without violent swings . The gauge in his car is version C which pretty much replicated the temp the ECU is seeing . If you have version B it's probably undereading ( sticker on the back ) I am going to proceed modifying mine now with the additional parts we sourced and had manufactured and give it more road testing as we move into autumn . Not much more to say , happy with the upgrade .
  9. To answer the queries above , both senders are in the same place , it's not the senders it's the gauge . Swapped it with Igor's this morning and the problem travelled with the gauge . Seems there's two specs with slightly different part no's, the one ending in C is the more accurate . Our modified bypass system worked fine on track . Going to modify the second car now .
  10. I thought I would post this to show why you shouldnt always believe the gauge , It's reading 75 ish yet the ECU is seeing 93
  11. My guess is that there's no stat in it or the stat is stuck open or the gauge and / or the sensor are duff . I drove my unmodified 620R from London to Anglesey today via mid and north Wales . Just over 300 miles . The temp gauge was never as low as 60 .the lowest I saw was 70 in the Cotswolds where it was nippy and I stopped to put a jumper on .i know my gauge under reads a bit . However frustrating it is the car needs to go back to Caterham for them to look at it . Speak to one of the directors explain the difficulties of your location and see if something can be sorted . Maybe you could put it on a ferry and someone could collect it at the other end .Caterham were helpful to me when I had a faulty hose split under warranty on the M25 , They collected the car and returned it when fixed .
  12. Mmmm Wasn't like this yesterday
  13. Mark having looked at the space available ( and I've got remote damper slaves there as well !) I think your going to need some tight right angle hoses with intermediate connectors . maybe cut from something like this ?
  14. well I am , hopefully , in Canada next year , I best come and see you !
  15. Right we need to move this ECU discussion to a new thread to protect Marks original discussion point . Aerobod , your not by chance at Anglesey on Monday are you ? Wouldn't mind a chat ...
  16. I may have confused with my terminology and also led by what I was told after Jim had his car upgraded . Jim added paddle shift to his car which necessitated a new 9A9 ECU and a separate " box of tricks " supplied by MBE . My understanding is that the 9A4 doesn't facilitate the functions needed for paddle shift. The new ECU was pretty expensive then it need the remap . As part of the remap a fuel pressure sensor and wideband lambda was added . I have an unlocked 9A4 on my car and when I enquired if fuel pressure sensing and pump control could be added I was told no . I didn't double check at the time but this is what I was told "No the unlocked 9A4 can not control the fuel pump. It was a direct replacement for the OE ECU allowing full access to the CAN information but by accident we found out during this build that the 620 fuel pump is just turned on by the OE ECU at a set voltage. No control. The 9A9 has high side power output which can control the voltage to the pump. It also has the ability to run wideband Lambda which is also needed for the upgrade." maybe that's wrong and an unlocked 9A4 would do the same if paddles are not required ? if so I feel my next project has appeared on the horizon ......
  17. Mark its not a new map by MBE , they just sell the ECU hardware . If you want a map specific to your car rather than a generic one then you need to take it to a specialist and put it on a rolling road . if you then want a map that takes fuel pressure into account you need to add a fuel pressure sensor to the car and upgrade the ECU to one that reads fuel pressure ( circa £3000 from memory ) if you do that Jim H has proven 355bhp . Once you've changed the ECU you can add flappy paddles to the gearbox .......for £xxxx it never ends ...... edit to add mapping issues are not specific to the 620 , you can read about many other models benefiting from a specific map . I had my previous R400 remapped , the generic map on that wasn't great , my 620 on the other hand runs much more smoothly with the Caterham map . .

That's an unmodified car ! But it's only idling . it was a test of logging not the modified installation .

    620R cooling

Hi Mark Did a bit of " testing " with the Easimap logging today , didnt drive the car just wanted to see if i could graph the temperature output . It worked ! Excuse the poor quality , it was a screen grab on the phone ,but at least i got temp and engine speed logged OK .Thanks for your help in putting me on the right course . Idle speed in green at the bottom , temp sat just under 80 for most of the time , the last section was when the fan kicked in at 92 . Next stage is a log of our modified installation on Monday ......
  20. I don't see how a stiffer spring would cause it to take longer to warm up . If the stiffer spring slows the thermostat opening you would think the reverse is true .
  21. "Force on the thermostat " ? Maybe flow through the uncontrolled cut out around the thermostat ........,,,
