  1. For anyone whos still has a full Lucas distributor & ignition amplifier on their x-flow change it! My ignition amplifier died so I was forced into a change and too tecnophobic to fit 3D. Another blatchatter provided me with a Ford Bosch Valencia distributor with a suitably modified advance curve with the electronics built into the end of it. Awesome blat this afternoon. 😬 The power delivery is sooooo much smoother, seamless and the car feels much much faster too (with the timing set up right) - not only a fix but a highly recommended upgrade and more or less plug and play - just a quick trip to a garage to get the timing set up.
  2. I do fancy going 3D, it is whether the only viable option for someone without enormous experience/knowledge is a full Weber Alpha 3D kit with harnesses and everything for around an eye watering £700 or whether something else really is a realistic alternative (such as Bill's Megajolt)
  3. Yes, it died quite spectacularly on the fast lane of the M40... The RAC guy couldn't create any spark but wouldn't take the distributor cap fully off because half of it was attached with a cable tie!!! (not by me!) I need to check the obsolete design rotor arm obviously, otherwise through a process of elimination the proble would seem to be with the obsolete lucas ignition amplifier. It seems almost certain I need to renew the system, the only question is whether it makes more sense to upgrade it.
  4. My lucas ignition system appears to have died. Please can someone tell me what 3d ignition options they recommend and give me some indications as to cost and ease of fitting. I have some knowledge of where the relevant bits of the current ignition system are but am certainly not an auto electrician, mechanic or electronic engineer! At the moment the car will not start so taking it somewhere is not really an option...
  5. Thanks again Neil. I'll probably get a mechanic friend to sort it - I've replaced a rotor arm before and know where the distributor is and where the attachments to the coil go but am not convinced I'd get it right! Having looked on the Aldon website, do you have any suggestions as to which of the ignitor models will be suitable for a 1700 135bhpish supersprint which currently has a Lucas amplifier and lucas coil? Thanks
  6. Thanks Neil. Is it possible that I might be able to fix the problem by replacing the under dash Lucas unit with an Aldon Ignitor? Or is there a rotor arm issue too? Where is the rotor arm? Sorry for my numptiness... There was something next to the carbs (the rotor arm?) that the RAC guy wanted to take a look at but was stupidly attached on one side by a cable tie. Thanks!!!
  7. Unfortunately I was stranded by the side of the M40 this afternoon / evening after my X-flow died... It kind of sputtered (sounded like backfiring) and could not be restarted. The RAC found there was no spark and that with the ignition on there was 12v on one side of the coil and about 7v on the other side??!! He seemed convinced it was the under dash Lucas ingition amplifier unit... Is this likely to be the problem? Anything else to check? I As I'm sure you can tell I know nothing about the ignition systems, in the process of fixing it, should I upgrade it too? Thanks
  8. Just a word of warning, the rear calipers particularly on mk2 Golfs were certanily quite a weakspot on them. I had to replace mine and if you check www.golfgti.co.uk forums you'll see its a common problem. While they may be a lot lighter I suspect they're also a lot weaker.

  10. Quite a lot of private interest at the moment, but thanks for the msg. Anyone else want to view this weekend? The car is in Stoke Poges (between Slough & Gerrards Cross).
  11. Only £5.50, you know it makes sense!!!
  12. Thanks Guys. Some reassurance always appreciated!

  14. I fitted a catch tank to my Supersprint? spec X-flow the weekend before last (Caterham supplied me with a MG Rover branded tank, hose etc). I put the tank just beneath the bonnet above the passenger footwell. This means the hose runs slightly uphill, but I shortened it a little to fit). The engine has not done many miles and uses neglible amounts of oil generally but I was suprised to not find anything at all in the tank after a 25 mile trip including a short motorway run (10 miles maybe). Should I be suspicious? (that I'm likely to find oil coming out of the cap etc) or could this be ok? Off to Brands on Sunday, so hopefully its working!!! Thanks

  16. Hi Alan, I'm about to change my seats to Tillets too and my seats like yours are currently fitted to a pair of chassis bars (sounds like yours). How did you do it? Thanks
  17. Thanks guys, think I might just have to keep skinny and rivet in some rails!
  18. Comparing a friend's 1999 car yesterday, it seems the rails are rivetted to the floor and not attached to the chassis, thereby putting all the weight on the floor. I understand I can buy the channels and have them rivetted to the floor, but does anyone have examples I can see of a better way?! Thanks again.
  19. I've bought tillet seats to replace my cloth ones. The cloth ones are attached via 4 bolts through 2 chassis bars. I don't have the under floor rails that the latest cars have for fitting Tillets. I don't believe the car has a honeycomb strengthened floor either? Should I retro fit some under floor rails? or Fit the seats through the chassis bars in some way (stronger I'd imagine)? Any suggestions how?! Thanks
  20. Mechanics say it stands for VERY VERY COMPLICATED
  21. I have a 1994 De-dion x-flow powered Caterham but it was built on a k-series 1.4 race chassis (engine mounts were modified accordingly by arch I believe). I'm wandering whether a rollbar from a 1999 k-series De-dion car would fit? Any thought much appreciated.
  22. My Dad used to take his Renault 21 to Boxer Motor Co (Renault specialists) Unit D, Reform Rd Maidenhead Berkshire SL6 8BT Tel: 01628 637566 He always had a good reasonably priced service from them and they even gave him a decent price for the car when he defected to BMWdom.
  23. Still not got around to fitting my seven grill having found some black rubber cement stuff holding the original one in place. Was this just the car builder being doubly cautious or do I need to get some more rubber cement to ensure it stays in place? Thanks
