  1. If it happens again without water loss and you have no air trapped in the system..then try changing the rad temp switch first off ..they are cheap enough if you cross ref with other vehicle makes I got one new for around £4 from a Peugeot fit.. just make sure the switching temp is the same as the one you have (normally stamped on side of switch) and thread size also.
  2. I seem to remember something way back saying the 1.6 8 valve engines fitted to caterhams were produced in Australia at the Holden plant ..they arrived too late at the Luton plant to be used in production and held in storage then sold to Caterham's I guess caterham got them at a good price. they are a good all round engine and easily maintained ..limited tuning but hard wearing ..I've got a 1.8 8 valve and it's quick enough but a little juicy with the fuel if you boot it ..and they sound great on those carbs.. the little research I've done on my 1.8 is it's a Carlton lump with a Caterham's tuned head. Speaking as an ex garage mechanic I can't get my head round that Caterham's vx 1.6 8 valve had no thermostat?? (post 8.)
  3. Quality car covers on eBay good Quality material comes in a bag £46.. To be honest I thought when I bought it having not seen one it possibly might be rubbish but was surprised for an indoor cover can't fault it
  4. I have an 1800 vx 8 valve and its a spitfire setup with girling calipers..you might get a piston service kit but if the pistons and bore are corroded (pitted) your wasting your time as a service kit used to be dust boot and seal only.. So you would need complete calipers if there badly corroded..try rimmer Bros they deal in Triumph spitfire parts .. What I personally would do if it was my car is strip down the calipers to take a look at the condition if it looks ok refit after a clean up. But if the boots are split you will need to replace them as brake dust gets in and jams up the Pistons. what year is your Caterham ?
  5. Thanks guys nick potter sounds ok for a contact I'll give them a call nearer the date.. They are not far from me and as one person has said nice Blat territory..I do have some knowledge of the back roads up to the Kettering area
  6. Having an 8 valve 1.8 vx with webbers I'm a little worried about when it's time for the MOT and emissions test ..I would prefer to take it somewhere Caterham friendly ..any suggestions arround Northampton area?
  7. I had the same worries as you but something was pulling me towards X flows and it wasn't long until I got one for my first Caterham I realised I made the rite choice for myself.. Every time I lifted the bonnet on a k series I felt there was something missing .. It didn't give me the Buzz and the same when they start up.. The carbs worried me a little but in reality they don't go out of tune like some people might tell you.. They do cough and splutter a little from time to time and you will get plenty of pops and bangs from the exhaust ..the whole thing is music to my ears.. Guaranteed you'll get a few more looks when it's coming down the road also... They are a lot easier to work on and parts and info are all out there in Internet land. you get a little nearer to the Roots of it all with an X flow and it all makes up for a much better driving experience for me...They are a little juicy on the fuel but if your not using it every day what the hell..a round of golf would cost me more for one day than I spend all week on fuel... At least that's the way I look at it. you don't get as many people chatting about them on hear and initially I was worried about that..but then realised how many K's there are out there..I wanted to be a little different and my mate who has a K thought I was bonkers in wanting one. As for the handbrake it was a little odd at first but it's quite true what people told me in that it's not used much unless I'm a hill and someone's behind me.. It's all more quirky.. And I love the whole thing.
  8. Wheels are 13" am in Northampton area

    Rev limiter

In the build manual I have inherited with the car there were two vx standard 8valve engines for the classic a 1600(1598) and the super sprint 1800(1784) and I'm pretty sure it's all bog standard apart from a caterham tuned top end (ported etc) or I may be wrong. but I have no info on the engine control unit .. I think an adjustable Rev limiter kit just connects through the HT circuit? if anybody has done this on the 8 valve engine I'd welcome some info.

    Rev limiter

Not sure about that apart from a black unmarked box on the interior NS bulkhead that looks as though it's an ecu? .. It's a vx Carlton engine car was built 2001.. But the Carlton control unit looks different.. I guess it must be specific to Caterham its single coil no points if that helps?

    Flat battery

Might be worth checking your starter motor for a fault (if not already checked)... They can totally kill a fully charged battery in no time when faulty.. If my car is going to be left for more than two weeks I put it on charge using a c tec conditioner ..it works well
  14. Hi is there anybody out there that's got some pages from a Haynes Webber manual they could send me? ..scanned and either posted or emailed.. happy to pay any cost incurred any info will do but always found Haynes easier to understand with pictures and step by step guidelines i want to refurb and set up my 40's Thanks
  15. Both mine have broken up completely.. Thanks for the offer but I think now I might be getting a pair of carbon ones from an early Santa ..fingers crossed.
  16. I'm a little surprised the MOT guy didn't pick that up ...reporting on leaks to shocks is as far as I know is part of an MOT.

    Redline parts

That'll do me guys.. Thanks ..mine is pre k series so fingers crossed I'll get some bits ..I've had parts from caterhams but they don't seem to have much stock in some bits.. I've identified front hub is of spitfire origin and ordered some parts from rimmer bros.. I thought getting the parts would be the easy bit.. I'm spending more time on the iPad than fixing the car.

    Redline parts

As I am new member and owner of a series 3 caterham.. I will be requiring parts.. Can anyone tell me if redline have an online parts catalog or will I have to call redline and talk to someone and explain what parts I need? .. I've been on there website but they don't seem to have a catalog...I currently need parts for front hubs and suspension.

  22. I have a caterham with a 1.8 ohc 8 valve vx engine and sporting those great looking Webber 40's I would like to keep them in tune ..so I am looking for advice /kit /guides etc .. Have a reasonable knowledge of mechanics But never had experience of 40's or 45's.. I know they can be a bit temperamental and thirsty if not kept in tune.
  23. Hi i want to buy a battery charger conditioner for my caterham battery...what's the best make for a fair price?..I don't want to spend a lot to get the same results..I looked at a CTEK 4 step charger at £40.. Would anybody recommend it.
