If you are building a 420 with a dry sump system - read this (kit received Aug ’23)

Somehow, posting this makes me laugh and reminds me of why I’m having so much fun building my CAT.

I’m using the 2.3 version of the build manual, and this relates to pages 68 through to and including page 73.

I foolishly followed the instructions, and upon completion, realized something was wrong. I emailed Build Support, and Lee replied to my email by writing:

===

The radiator, oil cooler, and subsequently the oil pipes have all been revised, therefore the routing has changed which is yet to be reflected in the assembly guide.

  • 39C059A – Rear sump union to bottom of oil tank (fit darker blue hose end to sump).
  • 39C060A – Forward sump union to L/H/S of oil cooler.
  • 3AE212A – Top of oil tank to R/H/S of oil cooler.

No kinks will be present once installed in these positions.

Kind regards,

===

I was alerted to this problem by BrettJ and his post from Jan 2, 2022. Thank you BrettJ.

Not life threatening, not serious, but funny in a CAT kind of way.

Hope this helps.

In the end I made my own solution using silicon hoses with some joints, it’s not great but better than forcing that stiff top hose.  If CC has sorted it, I’d rather use a single length.  Plus mine is now slightly more tricky to bleed as it raises over the cruciform.

The Build Guide is just that & always out of date !! The content of the guide for my 1994 1.4K Superport was purely Crossflow oriented so there were a lot of phone calls & faxed pictures & instruction updates.

Even in 2012 the guide for the R400 Superlight was still just that, a guide. Upside down picture & no updates for the latest engine installation. In fact I photographed the engine bay of a factory built R500 to record the latest spec.

Aaah those were the days..........

Indeed… for those of us looking back through rose-tinted glasses, it was an amusing idiosyncrasy and overcoming the lack of accurate direction was simply part of the rite of passage!

Following the directions from CAT worked. All 3 hoses are installed, no kinks and enough space for hose 39C059A to not touch the alternator.

FWIW - I knew going into this that the instruction are incomplete and that the best resource to build the car is this web sight along with the following sights. I've reached a point where I don't attempt to build the next step until reviewed the following...

Spend plenty of time getting your radiator as stress free as possible, especially mounting and hose connections (including the oil lines).  Depending on your options there is only so much you can do, but spending time getting a stress free radiator will save money in the long term.   I know of one 2021 420R that’s had 4 radiator failures, and at £700+ it’s not funny anymore.

Re: Top radiator hose - I followed in the footsteps of a member here and fitted the top hose from a 620R to my 420R. It replaces just the forward section of the standard stiff hose - I just got a coupler and swapped it in. It's been working well so far. My first rad started leaking after less than 3k miles. I didn't have any bleeding issues and the flexibility of the hose lets me take out my oil catch bottle to empty it instead of having to suction it out.
