clutch advice/ purchase

Well I can put off the gearbox build no longer so am busy sourcing parts to make it smooth and young again, road and Race seem the most helpful.

Clutch, 05/ 1800 K series with Caterham 6 speed box, need cover plate, friction disc and release bearing (anything else you knowledgeable guys would suggest?) - who are good and reliable as it will be posted halfway round the world I'd rather not open box to find it doesn't fit....Plus I'd like to fit it once and forget.

Car is used for fast road and 10 track days a year, so driveability is the main aim.

If you have the standard Ford clutch release fork, you might want to consider a new one.  These parts are generally indestructible, but the lugs that carry the CRB can wear, leading to the possibility of a mis-aligned CRB.  You might also want to renew the fork pivot pin and plastic sleeve while you're at it.

Is your flywheel in good nick -- no scoring?  (Of course, you won't know until the clutch is off!)

Thankyou good people, yup John I will have a careful look at flywheel when its disassembled. I was wondering about the release fork after following some threads on here so may well either source one from Uk or get a local engineering shop to look at it when its off, sounds sensible.

thanks again now all I've got to do is pop engine and gearbox out :)

Another part that can be changed on the K series while apart is the spigot bearing in the end of the crank, that supports the input shaft of the gearbox.

It is a ford bearing with a sleeve to make it fit the rover crank. They are notoriously difficult to remove and new sleeves (depending on source) can be very slightly loose. I had this with a QED sourced sleeve.

I would order 2 sleeves as they are unique to the seven. The Ford bearing, used in lots of RWD applications (escort, cortina etc) is probably available locally so just order one. If you have an install mishap you're not held up by a part thats a few pounds!

Revilla (Andrew) has written about them recently - just search on 'spigot'

Yes now I see the thread better warm up my cold chisel - err that doesn't make sense :)

Actually another thought - oil pump for engine? Whilst out I assume you just drop the sump, and figure it out. First thing I did on car was water pump timing belt and tensioner so oil pump would seem to be good insurance....?

If good oil pressure I wouldnt mess about with the pump. As Ian says it bolts to the front of the block behind the crank pulley / cam belt.

The clutch arm is a good call - mine had a crack forming where the cable attaches. Compared to its replacement, I think it was manufactured thin at that point due to the pressing being out.

  • 2 weeks later...

Working on Steve at SP to assist but has anyone knowledge of wether a kit such as this will fit;

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/110998918707?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

I understand the 6 speed shares many parts with the Ford type 9 so am working along that premise, still waiting for CC & Redline to respond and Road and Race were short on some parts so advised contact CC.... - I feel a bit like Julia Roberts in pretty woman trying to spend money in boutiques.... only way less pretty! :)

Thanks
