Jeff210R Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 Hi GuysI have a Titan LSD from my 2016 420R for sale with 5000 mls on it. It failed the wheel turning test and the oil was good and black so I reckon it's knackered. I've replaced it with a Quaife which I think is more suitable for my requirements but would be interested in opinions on its sale value as a reconditionable unit.Jeff
Leadership Team Shortshift Posted May 4, 2021 Leadership Team Posted May 4, 2021 An identical sounding unit just sold three weeks' ago on ebay for £299, so I guess that is the market value.James
ScottR400D Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 That sounds a good price. A new one is about £1000, a rebuild kit £500 plus fitting (CC prices) so £300 for a unit in need of rebuild seems quite high. Then again, the kit is £300 from Titan which makes more sense.
aerobod - near CYYC Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 The Caterham rebuild kit contains a few extra items if needed compared with the Titan one (such as the diff ring bolts, and a wider selection of shims by the looks of it), but all the wear items are in both kits. When I did my rebuild I bought the Caterham kit to ensure I wasn't short of any items for the perfect adjustment (bearing in mind shipping costs and time to Canada if I'm missing anything), but any subsequent rebuilds I do will be fine with my current stock of shims, bolts and a Titan kit.
Mrp Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 One for the diff experts would a 420R from 2016 and a 420R SV from 2017 have the same ratio ? Mazda Gearbox for my SVChrisC do you know ?ThanksMrp
ChrisC Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 The Mazda 5sp normally has a 3.91 BMW diff. But I assume the CWP isn't for sale, because its a part that's not available as a spare part from BMW. So if that needs replacing you have to start with a new diff. The 3.64 was fitted to 6 speeds. Edit 5/5, I miss read the Caterham Part site, change 3.62 to 3.64.
Mrp Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 Oh possibly I've misunderstood in my ignorance I thought this was the whole thing I could get refurbished and refitted not just the internat LSD unit. Sorry if I have mislead you Jeff.Mrp
aerobod - near CYYC Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 If you want to go from 3.62 to 3.91 as the diff ratio, you could always get a 3.91:1 CW&P from a BMW specialist or salvaged diff, the 3.91 in the 168K BMW diff was used in quite a few cars including the E46 3-series for 318 to 320 models, X3 2.5i, etc.
Jeff210R Posted May 4, 2021 Author Posted May 4, 2021 Yeah I was getting confused. Not unsual though! It's just the Titan LSD unit (which fits in a BMW housing).I'll put it in the for sale section.Jeff
ScottR400D Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 The 6 speed has a 3.64 BMW, the 3.62 was the old Sierra CWP wasn't it?.I had assumed we were only talking about the Titan unit, £299 would certainly be a good price for a complete differential, housing, CWP and all! I'm now wondering what it was that James B saw on EBay.As Aerobod says, you can pick up older BMW 168 diffs but the only parts of use are the CWP, the housings and backplates are different. I have seen them for as little as £150, though high mileage and unknown history.
Leadership Team Shortshift Posted May 5, 2021 Leadership Team Posted May 5, 2021 Here you go: ebay Titan lsd unit (sold)James
ScottR400D Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 So just the LSD. Can you recall the description James? Was it in need of a rebuild as Jeff's is?
Leadership Team Shortshift Posted May 5, 2021 Leadership Team Posted May 5, 2021 Standard ebay - just click on the link to the 'original listing'.James
ScottR400D Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 All I get is item sold, see what other items seller has for sale. Never mind.
Jeff210R Posted May 5, 2021 Author Posted May 5, 2021 Managed to get this guys. It was in need of a refurb so I think Ill advertise for £300 as that seems the going rate!Jeff
aerobod - near CYYC Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 As Peter says, the BMW 168K diff in use is in fact a 3.64:1 ratio (40 tooth crown wheel, 11 tooth pinion), looks like 3.62 has been used in general diff conversations historically. A 3.62 diff would be a 47 tooth crown wheel with 13 tooth pinion, as variants of the Sierra diff are.
Leadership Team Shortshift Posted May 5, 2021 Leadership Team Posted May 5, 2021 Replying to #16Err yes, as my reply at #2 was saying!James
