Tyre wear, alignment check and replacing

Evening All,

I've been blatting around plenty over the last 3 to 4 days having had a good deal of fine weather.  I've been using 420 due to the 620 cooling challenges.  While parked today taking some photos I noticed I've worn the front near side much more than the front offside.   The nearside is down to the wear indicator so needs replacing, after 3300 miles.  I appreciate uneven wear can happen, especially due to the camber on Manx roads, also heavy loading of the nearside while having fun at speed round the course.  I'm therefore not particularly concerned.  But I'm going to check my alignment at home, it was originally aligned using string etc by our local specialist.  The car handles brilliantly, so I'm not expecting to find anything or than my driving scrubbing the tyre.

My plan is to align straight the front wheels then measure the distance between the rear of wheel and chassis, then the front of the wheel and the chassis, hopefully to show the toe.  I need to find something suitable to measure with, I guess a tape measure at this point, and a common location on the chassis.  Just wondered if anyone had any guidance or tips, does and don't etc for doing this in my garage.

Finally best place to buy a set of ZZS fronts?  For ease and spare wheels for future trackdays I'm thinking of asking a supplier to send a set of tyres fitted to two new front wheels too.  Though they'll have to be happy shipping.  Is CC the best here?

Also views on the Compomotive CXR sold by Meteor, are they much better if at all than the standard Apollo wheel.  Any performance gains to be had.

Assuming that your dedion is actually square across the car then the string method is really very accurate, though a bit fiddly, and will allow you to adjust the toe accurately on each side (eg: to keep the steering wheel centred whilst having the correct toe across the entire front axle).  It might be worth checking the front wheel camber as well (digital spirit level or measurements and trigonometry) as you seem to have inner-edge wear only on one side of the car.  Make sure the camber is the same on both sides.

As for wheels - you seem to me to be an "OEM" sort of guy...  A set of Apollos would best fit the bill in my view.

That’s one hell of an eye that you’ve got there! 

I have a set of bars with fishing line that were made to fit a single seater we used to race. 

They work fine on the 7, supported on axle stands. I find fishing line much better than string.

Assuming the rear axle is perpendicular..... Hmm, that's why I made mine adjustable so I would dial it incorrectly as all the ones I've checked have been slightly out.

But first you need to make sure rack castor camber etc are set.

ALL checks and adjustments MUST be done with ballast on board otherwise you are wasting your time.

Thanks, I'll get myself a set of the TrackAce gauges.

The car was originally setup for my weight and no passenger, including camber and toe.  Will the car need an occupant when retesting the toe with the TrackAce system and camber through another method.
